I actually agree.
1. Penn State fans were WRONG worshipping Patterno
2. Alabama was WRONG firing 10 win football coach
3. UT fans were WRONG petitioning Cuonzo
The fact those other fans were dumb does not absolve ours of being dumb. Or are we only going to criticize others?
Not only do I disagree with your "assessment" in #3, your "assessment" is not even a factual one. There is NO such thing as "petitioning Cuonzo". None. The petition was to bring back the 2nd most successful coach in UTBB history who most certainly was coming available, publicly praised our Uni after being fired, married a wife from the area, and still has a home in Knoxville. It was an upgrade laid at our feet ... and The Barn swept in for the prize.
Our loaded BB team was hovering just > .500, on the NCAAT bubble, and deep in an inconsistent season. All while loaded with experienced talent. The recruiting class was ranked around 50th in the nation, and nearly all the talent (significant amounts from Pearl's tenure) were leaving at years end. 2014 was destined to the dumpster.
Thankfully, as admitted by the coach himself, the players found motivation in the environment surrounding the petition and went on a favorable NCAA run that looked about like what most everyone expected from the start of the year. The giant question is ... why did it take THAT to motivate this kind of talent to play as expected? Why were they not passionate for all / most of the 20 games to that point?
CCM is not a dumb man and took the first train outta Knoxville knowing what 14' was going to bring on the court and from the fanbase. He bought himself 3-4 years of positive cash flow in Berkeley and walked away with a "Sweet 16 coach" persona. I'm happy for him and his family too, because I believe he is a great guy. But his performance here was average at best IMO.
But this IS a business and those being circumspect about the state of the program knew we were headed downward after 14'. Had CCM / UT not slipped into a "Rnd 1" (aka play in game) of the NCAAT, then he would be seen almost universally as a failure. Thankfully, for us and him, it turned out differently. Since it is a competitive business (just like for players), UT was blessed to replace him rather than get saddled with another big buyout and what was trending toward mediocrity.
So, first of all, you should get the facts straight before calling fellow fans "irrational". Secondly, I suggest avoiding the upper crust national sports news emanating out of Connecticut, and pay closer attention to what you can see actually happening right in your own back yard.
More importantly, as dude stated above, it's past time to move on from that phase. The new coach has set off a nuke on the recruiting trail in the past week and we are looking up for the future.
