Lane Kiffin votes USC Trojans No. 1 in coaches' poll after saying he wouldn't - ESPN Los Angeles

USC coach Lane Kiffin said Tuesday that he "would not vote USC No. 1" in the coaches' poll, but he actually did, USA Today revealed Thursday night.

Citing Kiffin's providing of "false or misleading information" to the public and a desire to "set the record straight to protect the poll's integrity," the newspaper released Kiffin's top-voted team in the USA Today Coaches' Poll.

Votes are normally kept confidential until the final poll of each year.

He also said in response to Jim Mora's comments that he doesn't use negative recruiting. That's as believable as Big Foot or the Yeti

Kiffin defended his vote to the newspaper by saying his players would have found out one way or another if he hadn't put the Trojans No. 1.

"We have less players than everybody else," Kiffin told USA Today. "So looking at it from the outside, I wouldn't (vote USC No. 1). Did I? Yeah, I did. That's not based off of 75 vs. 85. That's based off of Matt Barkley, T.J. McDonald and Robert Woods and Marqise Lee. When everybody has the same record, I can't go into a meeting with our players and have them say, 'You put that team and that team ahead of us.' That's why I did that."

The preseason poll was Kiffin's first-ever vote in the USA Today Coaches' Poll.

His roster just got short. He has 75 schollies this year, but will only be able to sign 15 in '13 and '14 as well. The earliest he'll be able to have a full 85 is 2016. A lot can go wrong between now and then.

That's why I said "if" he doesn't screw up.

The guy is a hell of a football coach. I don't think that's debatable.

It's everything else that is.

I'm not sure I agree. He might be a good, or even great, football coach. But do you think his body of work proves that?

I think a guy that has had the success he's had and can surround himself with the coaching talent he keeps, will always be successful in the college game.

He's an elite offensive mind. He can recruit against anyone in the country.

I agree with this. But it's not terribly hard to do at USC.

Kiffin should've just been honest. However, I'm surprised the editor was so upset he needed to leak the story and send Kiffin a formal letter detailing how his comments hurt the poll's credibility. I've never heard of anything like this happening before.

Big Papa,

You'll be thrilled to know improving the D has been a major part of the staff's strategy for '13. We've got 2-3 5* DEs and CBs to fill the void. And QB busts can always happen, but so far we've got (2) top 100 RSo and a 5* coming in for '13...not to mention the Sills kid prodigy for '15. As far as I'm concerned, one will have to be decent.
