USA Women Begin WUG Play

You've got to be kidding me. Canada sucked the air out of the building and had 9 TOs. She couldn't make a post entry pass to save her life, and she was out of control all game long, which ironically helped her in the end get to the FT line.

Agree with your assessment. Canada has speed, but she plays the "it's every one for one's self" type of basketball that has become prevalent in some of today's young players. Her passing was atrocious and many times she just put her head down and went for the basket, only to be bailed out by foul calls. I also was not impressed by Brionna Jones in this game. She played a bit timidly and seemed not to watch around her. Hopefully, she and the whole team will play better as they adjust to the physical nature and non calls of international basketball. Mercedes played well, for the most part, and Diamond, even with the injured ankle showed flashes of how quick she can be. Now on to the next opponent.

Canada would not have been my pick for point guard on this team, but that's who the selection crew picked. Granted she had a plethora of turnovers, I give her credit for being one of the few who "got it" late that the team needed to play with more urgency to avoid the upset. Many of the players lolligagged through the game seemingly casual and uninspired. Some of her turnovers were misguided missiles, but the physicality of the game had its effect on her too and sometimes the posts just don't give the guards much of a target due to softness or lack of effort. The selection crew knew what it was getting with Canada and passed on some other options. If she plays selfishly or defiantly, the coaches are allowed to rotate her out of the lineup.

Recorded the game. Russell looks like a different player. Can't believe they wasted her freshman year even.

I agree that Russell looks much better, but she didn't let anyone know she was hurt until after the season. She played on bad feet her entire freshman season. With that being said, she will be a dangerous piece for this team. I'm hoping that Russell can do for Tennessee what Griner did for Baylor defensively. Once she get her timing down on both sides of the ball, watch out! I don't think we will see much of DeShields, she was had on a boot during this game. I guess she will get back in the thick of things during the Italy trip. If Graves play like she did her Freshman season, her and Russell will wreak a lot of havoc.

I only saw the first half. Russell looked great but got in foul trouble early and had to sit. She is going to have to watch that this year. Leaves her feet all the time. She is moving much better. A lot of talent there. DeShields, didn't see her play.

The refs were kind of funny. If you hit them with your body it was a foul but you could hack the crap out of them.

By the way Russell is the starter over Brionna Jones of Maryland. Russell is much quicker and moves much better. Jones still good though. Big body.

Terrible luck for Deshields would have been a chance for her to get back into the flow of basketball. Hopefully she recovers and can play big minutes in Italy.

I watched the game. Mercedes was a tower of strength on the boards. There was one play in the second half where she beat everyone down the floor for the layup only to miss the gimme. That was certainly faster than she ran as a freshman. If she could lengthen her stride, she could be really fast for a player her size but that's a bio-mechanical issue.
The team had less than half of the turnovers that they had in the first game (33 to 16).
China doesn't have quality depth and we wore them down. By the fourth quarter you could really see the difference in overall speed between the two teams.

Did you watch the China game? If so how our girls do?

DD didn't play MR looked pretty good she had a dbl/dbl, looks like she's getting her rhythm. USA can't hit free throws!! Would like to see DD well and playing.

I'm just amazed at Russell. Probably one of the best if not the best player on the team. Very athletic and quick for her size. She's going to be a handful this year for our opposition.

Where / when / how did Deshields get the ankle injury?

She injured it at UNC, and played the entire year hurt. When she got to Tennessee, she was on no contact for about three months so that it could heal.

It flared up during USAB tryouts, as that was the first real scrimmages she has had since UNC. She practiced while sitting out, but not at the level of USA tryouts.

They are easing her back in, and it's good that Holly is there to watch over her. Other coaches may have pushed her to play a lot.

Diamond is going to be fine.

But why is her ankle "flaring up"? Let's hope it's not a ligament issue or something chronic.

I'm glad Russell is starting to look like the #1 player in her class. Her freshman year I was wondering how could she be ranked higher than Diamond. But when your hurt, your hurt.

I heard them say on the WUG broadcast that she has 5 permanent pins in one ankle and more than that in the other one. I thought it was in her feet?
