The PAC 10 is solid this year but they don't have that team that is head and shoulders above the rest.

No we don't, however TODAY we have 4 teams excluding USC that are completely capable of going toe to toe with anybody in the country.

Oregon
Stanford
Oregon State
Arizona

I think the PAC 10 is pretty good, but I haven't seen anything which tells me that Arizona and Oregon State can play with Florida and Alabama.

tenn was starting a 5th year senior. ucla a redshirt freshman.
Still not as bad as Wake Forrest beating the team that crushed the two premier programs in the conference. Not to mention UT was starting a bunch of new guys, some walk-ons, and a quarterback who didn't start performing for a few weeks after that.

I don't believe Oregon State can go toe to toe with anyone in the country. The others on the list I can certainly entertain at the very least.

UT went toe to toe with the two of the best teams in the country, it certainly doesn't mean they are as good as the best teams in the country obviously.

silly facts will be ignored as they do not support his scenario.

I'll admit the PAC 10 looks way better this year, but you guys have to admit that there isn't a lot to go on in out of conference play. The biggest OOC win I see is against Ohio State, who is way down and lost to Purdue.

Arizona lost to Iowa. I'm not giving them too much credit.

A fifth year senior playing under his third OC, while he had more game experience he was about on par with a freshman qb.

Barely losing to Iowa doesn't do much for me. It's still a loss to a wildly overrated football team.

Sans all of his WR corps and with all new LBs and corners. We made 4 TOs to lose it. UCLA cant today play with UT.

If Tenn and UCLA played again this weekend, I'd see a 21-17 type victory for us.

Even though I'm an admitted Pac-10 homer (still a Tennessee fan first and foremost), I'm still not as convinced as some of you that the Pac is the best conference in the country. It just comes down to comparing who has more negatives.

I'd say there many more "very good" (not great) teams out here than in any other conference, but some of the OOC games do hurt. Oregon State got crushed by Cincy, Zona lost at Iowa, etc. And of course no national title contenders up top. To be real, though, Florida and Alabama are both an unlucky bounce of the football away from having a loss or two on their record, and creating a Texas-TCU national title game.

All valid arguments. It's been a strange season so far. But best conference? I'll still give that title to the SEC... Barely.

I'm all over the map on this one. I believe the Pac10 is the best conference this year because it has more good teams. There is no team at the top like in the SEC with Florida and Alabama, but the SEC has some really bad teams like Vanderbilt and a bunch of average teams. As for the best team in the country, I think it is Texas even though I'd say the SEC is a better conference.

That ranking shows the ACC and Big East ahead of the Big XII and Mountain West. What a joke.

I disagree. I think that is accurate as long as you're averaging the entire conference from top to bottom and factoring in strength of schedule, etc.

Mountain West better than the ACC as a conference? No way.

Why do you say that? He made a computer formula that ranks teams objectively. What about the formula is wrong, in your opinion?

how about that for years his formula would have awarded the 98 NC to Ohio St. That showed me he really wasn't that great

He has some engaging polls, and I'll glance at them from time to time. Some people like him more than others. Albeit I would never use him to make a point. He likes to be different, and however right he may be on one point, he is completely off on another.

In 98, it appears that he didn't have separate columns for wins and points based formulas: USATODAY.com

Which is how that could have happened. Ohio State beat tough opponents by more points, which a points based formula regards highly.

The formula that counts points only is very simple. It's kind of the obvious and only sensible way to set it up. I found this out when I built my own rating system and found that the way I built it spit out nearly identical results as his. The only differences come in when you start weighting things like home field advantage.

So, I don't think it's fair to blame him for what really is a practical and basic way to measure teams on the basis of points scored.

I guess I don't understand. Likes to be different? He makes the formula and lets it figure out who is ranked where. There's no room for him to do anything to be different.

Most of the other polls go by wins only. But, that can come up with some weird results too. Sagarin offers both types of polls side by side and a third poll that averages the two, which I think is the best way to do it.
