USC lands top QB recruit in Wittek

I'm interested in hearing why Sarkisian has proven to be better than Lane. He improved a bottom of the barrel team into a team that still sucked, but got lucky and beat a USC team without their starting QB. You give Kiffin a kicker or put McElroy on ice and the Vols beat the national champs in their own house.

The bad news is this QB will be having fun playing in meaningless games since they are going to enjoy being on probation.

how has sarkisian proven to be a better head coach than kiffin?

harbaugh is 2-1 and one of those games was a complete and utter fluke. i think kiffin will do much better. harbaugh has a losing record against many pretty mediocre pac-10 coaches including jeff tedford.
Harbaugh is a great coach. Stanford was awful when he took over, and he had them pretty competitive in the PAC 10 race. The class he has coming in is great, too. He'll be fine, but he won't be there that long.

If you think kiffin will fail at USC your on crack only thing that will slow him down will be how many schlorships they will lose

The guy is brilliant. Get a fat raise before you get your butt kicked. Why sit around a sliding USC? Cash in on his high stock now. He sits at USC and they struggle, he never lands the NFL job.

I just don't see the struggling you are talking about and sure do not see Pete getting his butt kicked at USC. This just makes no sense.

So you question why Sark is a better coach, then use an example of a game Sark won compared to a game Kiffin lost?

Last year knocked Carroll back a bit - it was a coaching struggle. Now with big brother snooping around and skeletons jumping out of closets, it's no coincidence he jump back to the league.

You expected a national title with a freshman QB? USC also lost their OC and whatever coaches he took with him to Wash. Of course it was going to be a step back/transition year.

The NCAA for all we know is going to give USC a slap on the wrist.

It may be a slap on the wrist, it may not. Apparently Petey didn't want to stick around to find out what the NCAA will do nor how that freshman will work out at QB.

He got ridiculous offers every year to go back to the league. His timing on this was a perfect career move.

I don't know if Kiffin is a good in-game coach yet. He hasn't stayed at a place long enough for me to judge that. But he is one heck of an OC and he has the best DC in the game. Add that to the fact that he has one of (if not the) best recruiting staffs in the country and you get a successful tenure. You can tell me all you want about UCLA, Cal, and Oregon but USC is the still the dominating power out there and they can get whatever player they want.

It really baffles me how people are saying Kiffin is only an average recruiter. Coming off a 7-5 season, he would have been able to pretty much pull in a top 4 or 5 class this year against the likes of Saban and Meyer. That counts as impressive in my books.

It's funny how the same guy that says Fulmer should still be the coach at UT also says that Pete ain't a great coach. Makes sense actually.

...also it's USC, regardless of who's coaching they're going to be able to point to their recent draft numbers - especially in the first rounds - and their QB's both drafted and starting in the NFL (including a guy who didnt even play in college) and the good recruits will continue to flock b/c of such

Plus, it isn't too hard to convince a kid to come live in LA as opposed to come live in the middle of nowhere.

There is no doubt the timing was right, but to act like he did it because he was scared of competition makes zero sense.

I think everyone knew at some point he was going to give the NFL another try.

that too

and it's pretty hard to beat a school that can say "the qbs that come out of our system are so good, even the guys who don't get playing time still get starting jobs in the NFL"

If his machine at USC had never sprung an oil leak, he'd have never left.

BTW, I challenge anyone that has seen the skit, to say Colonel Angus with the accent and not smile.

First, who on this board thinks Fulmer should be the UT coach?

Second, who is saying Pete ain't a great coach?

Maybe, but is there really any way to know?

Yea, I had never seen that skit until recently and it's one of the funnier things i have seen in a long time.

Late to the party like always, but I'm with Droski on this one. Thinking Kiffin won't be winning Pac-10 titles is just sour grapes, plain and simple.

He had the more talented at home last year and got embarrassed by Slick Rick. He now gets to play him every year. Not to mention his old man is a short timer as is Coach O. He's alienated himself across the coaching landscape the last two years so he won't backfill with quality coaches.

Will he be successful? Maybe. If so, good for USC. But my prediction is a slow slide to mediocrity by Troy.
