USC QB JT Daniels Enters Transfer Portal

Pretty sure we did this in 2018, already?
Former 5 star, "winning" record QB was going to steal the show! Yeeeeeah!

But even that guy couldn't beat out the Bayonne Badass šŸ˜Ž.
Either JG transforms, or Maurer and Bailey take over.

Transforms significantly better I might add. No more 5% better send him out there, after the amount of time he's had on The Hill, he needs to be a lights out type player or move on early IMO.

If Tee thinks Daniels is the man, we should do what is needed to get him. Bailey is the future but he is going to need a year to be his best - unfortunately, with all the corona mess, I dont think he will be ready enough for fall to be at his potential. that leaves us with JG. I would rather have some other options.

Sorry gang, but how long has it been since we've had a really GOOD QB? And would any of you bet $10K of your own money that one of our 7 on the roster can get us 9 wins??

If you're not willing to make that bet, than let's send JT a one way ticket to KTown!

I think he winds up at LSU trying to capture some of that Joe Burrow magic.

As for here, it's JG's job to lose, and just like last year, I think he will. The difference is, this year, Bailey is waiting in the wings. I hope he's ready, if not, JG will get the job back by default, just like last year.

All of this is my opinion.
I don't care who the starter is. I just want him to light it up.
I could see him going to Lsu or Ole Miss.

Would he really want to compete here or go somewhere in like the MAC and start right away?

He's physically not ready to play and when the orthopods talk this out between one another, in April/May, there will be a honest question on how ready he is going to be post-rehab. No one knows.

If I am him, I'm looking for a school who is willing to roll the dice on my medical condition AND hand me the ball as a starter. For these two reasons alone, I don't see him coming here, it's not CJP's style (especially the no compete). He's built a culture that is *all about* competition and understanding the system he's installed.

No, too many hurdles to jump especially since the 2020 season is in serious jeopardy. If/when it tanks, HB has an entire year to prepare and a one-and-out guy isn't going to be looked upon favorably by Bailey, our future.

There doesn't seem like any way JG isn't the starter week 1 just because they believe in him so much. Then you are pissing off Maurer and Bailey and competing with them too.

I just think we have plenty of QB's. JG, BM, JT all did good things last year, Kasim Hill was a starter at Maryland. Bailey has the most talent. Jimmy Holiday sounds good too.

Donā€™t give up hope. Iā€™m convinced that as a 9th year Senior, the light will finally turn on for JG.

After all, he will likely still be the starter then anyway........

Have no doubt....This has been one of the great mysteries of the universe. Football historians will be studying the JG situation for years to come.:)

For the life of me I don't understand why anyone thinks Maurer would be a good SEC QB. He has not shown he's capable. He's fearless, but that's his problem. He thinks he can make throws he can't. One INT for every 7 completions, 2 TD, 5 INT, and he probably should have been intercepted two more times. A winning QB takes care of the ball. Mauer has not. He may turn out to be really good, but nothing he has done to date indicates that will be the case.

I think the absolute Best Case scenario for JT Daniels is the only way I would feel comfortable taking a 7th QB, but in order for it to happen an inordinate amount of pieces have to fall in line for it end up being successful.

Best Case: JT Daniels commits. The 2020 season is not cancelled due to COVID-19 and moves on as planned. Harrison Bailey redshirts. Daniels comes in and picks up the system rather quickly, his injury proves to be a non-issue. His two years of college experience allows him to make a seamless transition and he ends up beating JG for the starting role, has a great 2020 season, and declares for the draft the next year.

That's a lot of if's and buts. If all that doesn't happen, then you run into the issue of Bailey, Maurer, and Shrout all looking elsewhere if they see their potential opportunity to play shrinking, and then you could possible lose 4-5 QBS off the roster in 2021 (JG graduates, Hill graduates, Maurer or Shrout transfer, Bailey transfer). I know thats a Doom & Gloom scenario, but I just don't know if Daniels is a great fit, especially with some of the QBs we are in on for the 2021 and 2022 class. And with our proclivity for injury issues at the QB spot, I am concerned about losing depth.

You realize he did that by playing parttime as a scrawny true freshman. Any Qb will learn to make better decisions than they did as a freshman. In NFL, Peyton set record for most rookie interceptions. But he learned from that and got better.

On ā€œThe Swain Eventā€ this past Thursday (16th), Jason Swain and Ben McGee weā€™re talking UT womenā€™s basketball around the 40 min mark. Ben was arguing that better players would lead to less turnovers when Jason used our qb room (all 5 scholarship qbs) as an example to drive his point home that decisions are NOT connected to talent. He asked Ben ā€œwho do you think is our best qb in terms of TALENT?ā€ Ben responds ā€œJarret Guarantano.ā€ Jason responded, ā€œI think itā€™s Brian Maurer.ā€ ā€œHe can make all the throws, heā€™s accurate and he can run it as well. But his DECISIONS effected his competition % and lead to ints (paraphrased).ā€ This has been my point all along. Take his talent and hypothetically fix his decision making (which will come with time and coaching) and those that wish him gone will one day regret how they felt about the freshman version of him based solely on 4 starts of his college career if he were to leave.

It also took him several years to turn into a winning program in the nfl. You don't have that luxury in college football. Do you think Maurer is going to change overnight?

Hell change with the opportunity to grow just like any other QBs in the history of this game.

Uhhhhh no it didn't.

The Colts were 13-3 in his second year.
The Maurer hate is ridiculous.

He was EIGHTEEN and mostly didn't practice with the first team.

Before the injuries he was looking like the obvious choice to take over for JG.

He is the main reason the offense and pretty much the team was able to turn it around. If it wasn't for his fearlessness and ability to make plays, we probably wouldn't have made it to a bowl game.

Not everybody is perfect at the start of your college career at the age of 18 in the SEC.

It's ridiculous to say that either you are great right away or you're just never going to be good enough as a QB.

Its insane to write Maurer off. Watch the first half of the UGA game, the MS state game he was moving the ball at will. Yes bad decisions were made. True Freshmen do that. Then look at the Bama game. One of his picks was Jajuans fault for dropping the pass. Still drove us down. Scored a TD on a sneak the right way. Had more passing yards than JG had in one quarter.

Did JG ever look at good as a freshman? I don't think so.

He outplayed JG at Florida too.

Was starting to get it going against Kentucky with the field goal drive and deep pass to Callaway. Then they throw JG out there.

JG played well against SC. Second half against Kentucky. Missouri game.

The fact BR pretty much matched him as far as productivity and good play as a true freshman, would make me more comfortable with the job coming down to Maurer and Bailey next year.

Maybe JG will finally find consistency, but lord knows if that will happen. I'm sure it will cost us against Oklahoma probably.

Itā€™s refreshing to know Iā€™m not alone on this board. Good post! Every word is true!

QBs thinking LSU is another OU type springboard to the Heisman and playoffs might want to just observe this season. That one off with the QB whisperer isnā€™t their norm. Maybe it got the ball rolling with the countless weapons and resources in that program, but this will be an interesting litmus test.

LSU has been a place where highly ranked QBs have gone to die. The last good QB they had before they struck lightening in the bottle with Joe Burrow was Jamarcus Russell, and he was a basket case.
