Regardless, I'm not sure what the John L. Smith year and bielema's first year with a depleted roster has to do with anything. We know we sucked lol
"We know we sucked"
Is a long way from "we recruit under the radar guys and have much more success to show for it. Recruiting rankings are for February chest bumping"
Arkansas' good years were partially because Petrino is a heck of a coach, but also because the recruits were on a different level.
2010-2011 (10 win seasons) main contributors:
Ryan Mallet was a blue chip QB (#2 QB, 5 star)
Tyler Wilson was borderline blue-chip QB (high 4 star)
Wingo was bordlerline blue-chip RB (high 4 star)
Broderick-Green was a highly touted 4 star RB
Knile Davis was a highly touted 4 star RB
Jarius Wright was a 4 star WR
2007-2009 were pretty average, but the 2006 team was good (10 wins), and composed of:
Mitch Mustain - #2 overall QB (5 star)
Darren McFadden - #1 athlete (5 star)
Felix Jones - High 4 star, blue chip athlete
Peyton Hillis - #1 fullback, high 4 star
In between these great Arkansas seasons we see them return to mediocrity, with main contributors consisting of mostly 3 star talent. Oddly enough, Arkansas had very potent offenses in their very good years, but the defense often kept them from breaking through to elite status as a team. Very hard to find 4-5 star guys on the defensive side of those Arkansas rosters.
2004 was 5-6
2005 was 4-7
2008 was 5-7
'12-'14 a combined 12-22
I stand by my point that to reach the goals Arkansas has, they will need to improve their recruiting tremendously from where it is right now.
If the goal is 7-8 win seasons, I think that can be accomplished even this year. But that doesn't satisfy fans for very long, and the SECW is obviously very competitive. A very good team can lose 4 games in this league. Alabama, Auburn, and LSU aren't going anywhere. aTm has a very big advantage. The east is on the upswing and will likely have 3-4 comparable teams within the next few years.
