I agree that that will be his sales pitch, but I question its effectiveness to attract truly transcendent talent at that position. Given the option, the best players might prefer a year in an elite strength and conditioning program and exposure to top-flight position coaches before being pitted against some of the best defensive lines in the country. With these kind of numbers...it's easy to see that Coach Pruitt's most effective recruiting talk to prospective lineman goes something like:
"Young man, I can pretty much GUARANTEE you'll be thrown into the game from day one...straight outta High School. We're gonna be depending upon you to open those running lanes and provide pass protection against our typical top 10 ranked SEC opponents".
Plenty of folks here blame Guarantano, and dismiss the "OL sucks" argument. This stat should at least make them revisit this argument. I'm not saying Guarantano is even close to the best qb in the SEC or even close. But that young man was hammered all season. Most of us would be in traction by now with the hits he took.Nope, dont dare blame coaches. Nothing he coulda done, nothing at all....
Jokinf of course
Agree 1000%...unfortunately, most frosh OL take time to gel in the system and develop strength. If we bring in Wright, and both he and Morris are early enrollees, that will go a LONG way to helping OL continuity. Both those guys should be given UT Fast Pass bracelets like Disney, where they go straight to the front of the line to start.Lack of line play has been a problem for a number of years. As far I am concerned everyone signed in Feb. should be a big nasty Mama-jamma.
I don't know how Mullen does it down there but if after (in some cases) 10-15years of playing OL a kid doesn't understand that the guy lined up on his facemask needs to be blocked, tackled, held or chopped then I don't think you can help them with complicated coaching schemes. No empirical evidence to support but I will say of the video I have watched and games I rewind to see what happened, that 2/3 of the time it wasn't a missed assignment or failure to pick up a blitz. It was pure inability to block the guy lined up over you.Now the question is....
Is a result THAT bad only on the players?
Trey is the only one to have a reason. Hope the kid get better soon. This O-line is what Butch left us. Pruitt is fixing the problem. We get that 5 star kid (Wright) in February to go with what we just got, then this O-line will be in a lot better shape. And we’re supposed to be impressed with Friend??
I remember the Oline getting decemt push in the spring game and thinking things had improved. Wrong. Sure, Oline recruiting fell off but not as bad as the results we’re seeing. Even Trey looked bad the times he was out there.
Tough to say really. OL did have bright spots against BARN & KY but that is it. 2017 OL squad with essentially the same players under CBJ were also horrible. Trey Smith is really the only current NFL OL prospect on the entire roster (he may never play again) so that is very telling IMO. You cannot make chicken salad out of chicken schit. Now the question is....

In other words, we suck......130th out of 130 teams by OL Stuff Rate - "the percentage of carries by running backs that are stopped at or before the line of scrimmage"
2018 NCAA OFFENSIVE LINE STATS | Football Outsiders
What is really amazing isn't just that we are last in this category, but the margin by which we are. All other 129 fbs teams are in a range of 10.2% (Wisconsin) to 26.6%. That is a 16.4% range total. But, there we are way out in left field another 6% from our nearest neighbor at a whopping 32.6%. Yes, a full third of our runs were stopped right at the LOS or behind. That is insane.
What's even worse? Of the last 4 years they've been tracking the stat, no one has reached our level. Next closest was 28.7%, not even close! Suck it 2017 Texas State!
We can only go up from here!
