UT Offers PG Chris Chiozza (2014)

Chiozza was discussed on Gary Parrish show tonight. USC also offered.

I am glad to see that we offered and will be interesting to see what Pastner does. They have Pookie Powell coming in this year, and he is an undersized PG as well. Not sure if Pastner was to take them in consecutive years.
Pookie Powell is 6'1 while Chiozza is roughly 5'9/10, Chiozza's height is only reason most major schools haven't offered not to mention 2014 is loaded with PG's.

Not sure 3 inches is that much of a difference at that height, but to be honest, those weren't my words. This was discussed by Parrish and Easterwood. Easterwood said there are prejudices in recruiting. Said Chiozza is really good but people are prejudicial of his height. Easterwood is a Memphis homer.

If kids were smart, they would not play for Frank Haith. Wasting talent.

They have Pookie (assuming he qualifies) and if they add Mathieu (an undersized PG) I can't imagine them really pursuing Chiozza too hard.

I agree about Haith, unfortunately Chiozza get compared to Pressey and probably sees himself as such, and where did Pressey play? Our style may not be something that really flatters him, may be something Martin really has to try and sell him on.

He now has offers from UT, Missouri and USC. I expect others to come soon. Sounds like Florida is very interested too.

I spoke to a couple of people close to White Station last night and they swear Chiozza is no more than 5'7". I still think he's very similar to Pressey.

People claim the kid is anywhere from 5'7" to 5'11". The only way that Memphis gets involved (I think) is if Pookie Powell doesn't qualify, and if we're able to find a transfer like Trevor Lacy so that Chiozza has some time to get used to the college game.

AMAZING vision on the court. That double spin move and behind the back pass was sick. It's funny they slowed down the clips because you would imagine the game going a lot slower for someone with good vision. I'd love to have this kid. I couldn't imagine a backcourt of Hubbs and Chiozza.

Lacey isn't a PG. What would he and Chiozza have to do with each other? Or are you talking about guards in general vs PGs?

There is no way this kid is 5'11. I'd guess 5'7 or 5'8. He looks really really small but very quick.

That would seem strange to me, but ok. Not sure why you take a commitment from a SG and try and make him a PG. I'd rather have Mathieu if that was the intention as he is a natural PG.

Pastner isn't scared to run a 2 guard at the point, see Chris Crawford and Geron Johnson, who would be called a "combo".

Lacy is closer to a "combo" guard than a "wing" and I think he'd have no problem running the point at Memphis. I don't think much of Mathieu, and I'd rather have Lacy (a star at a big conference school) for two years than Mathieu ( a walk-on at Norfolk St.).

I guess he could play PG, but Lacy is a scorer. Seen him too much to know.

This is the reason he doesn't have many high major offers......

Siva is what, 5'10" on a good day? I remember all the talk about Russell Wilson being too short that's why he fell, yet look at the production. I think the height thing is just so overvalued, especially at the college level...if the kid can play he can play jmo.

I agree size is overrated especially if a kid is able to play above average against larger opponents.

Siva is listed at 6'0" and was a HS AA.

I've seen the guy as much as anyone, and I know Pastner's proclivities: he'd run point. Just because Lacey is a scorer doesn't mean he can't run point. You Vol fans get too caught up in the "Is he a 1 guard or a 2 guard" debate.

It appears that Chiozzo has offers from UT, Auburn, USC, Missouri, VCU, Richmond, Kent State, Murray State, Ole Miss, and UMass. His recruiting is definitely heating up. I would bet offers will be extended from more high majors.

What a blanket statment.

It is a legitimate question IMO, and no one is saying he CAN'T play PG in Memphis' system. It's just odd that Pastner would openly seek out a really good SG and ask him to play PG when he has to sit out next season anyway. Peculiar, because he has the rest of this cycle (what little may be left from the SR class and other transfers), and then the entire 2014 cycle that is littered with really good, actual PGs.

Again, Memphis has taken Chris Crawford, Joe Jackson, Geron Johnson and Antonio Barton and played them interchangeably at both the 1 and the 2. Lacey would be no different. I don't see what the issue is.
