Excerpt:

Freshman Jonathan Crompton fared the best for UT in the face of the pressure under center, completing 7-of-13 passes for 87 yards and two touchdowns.

Crompton found Lucas Taylor from 27 yards for his first scoring strike, and the former Parade All-America capped the day's scoring with an 11-yard touchdown toss to LaMarcus Coker during the Vols' two-minute drill.

Starting quarterback Erik Ainge completed 13-of-26 attempts for 120 yards and two interceptions, but the junior showed good mobility and scrambled for a pair of first downs.

I am happy to see Demonte Bolden had 2 tackles for loss and a sack. Hope he comes into his own this year.

i went to the scrimmage and Crompton was far and above Ainge in it. The lineplay was simply aweful. They have good footwork and are technically sounds they just dont have much talent on the line. Crompton looked very good. Also in a trick play James Wilhoit caught a TD pass which was pretty cool. Ainge looked aweful, he threw two LSU like interceptions where he just lobbed it up and had a bunch of his passes were hitting at the WRs anckles.

OOOOH AINGE!!! :banghead: YOU MAKE ME SO MAD!!

This is not encouraging for any hopes to win opener versus Cal.

The offense looked pretty bad but the backs looked good. We are using the TEs again now. The backs would get yards when the could and looked really good but lack of blocking kept their stats low. I hate to say this but I went to all of last years scrimmages and i left last falls feeling the same way I do now. Our line looks worse, backs look a little better, starting QB looks bad, defense dominates.

"That is what we have seen in the past and that is not acceptable," Cutcliffe said of Ainge's play. "That is what we scrimmage for. Playing quarterback is sometimes as much about knowing when not too do something as there is when to do it. Obviously, I have not gotten that point across well enough yet."

Thanks for the interesting input, thats why I come to this board.

Its not going to surprise me if Crompton is named the starter for the Cal game. If he looks better then Ainge now, I think he will improve more then Ainge before the season starts since he is only now fully back from surgery. Its only one scrimmage though. I think Cutcliffe's comments were on the money. Unacceptable.

Describing our starting offensive line's play as awful is not accurate. They were pretty solid for the most part. We need to build depth, that is without question the bigger concern. The starting Oline looked better than last year.......without question.

Other than the field goal fake, did we score with our starting O-line intact?

solid? They were getting penetrated non-stop, and werent keeping any cut lanes open during the zone plays or anything. I thought it was pretty poor play.

I was there to and people have to understand,Our defense will make alot of teams look bad this year. If the O can just catch up with them, We will be on our way to a really nice season

Man this worries me. I was hoping Ainge would not pull this crap in the fall. If he plays so bad that they have to name Crompton the opening game starter, then Crompton better be good enough to get us through the whole season. Ainge has already shown us he cannot deal with this type of situation, coming in as the non-starter. If he doesn't start against Cal, he is pretty much shot for the season.

It's the first scrimmage back and the defense is always ahead of the offense at this point. Let's give it another week or two before everyone starts freaking out all over again.

Whatever helps you get through it. :p

If the offense is still like this or even worse next weekend, I might start to worry a little. Just sounds to me like the defense had the better day.

It is hard for me to give the Defense credit for the Mental Mistakes by at JR QB.

We just have to make that jump to the 2nd level this week. The OL wasn't horrible on run blocking(check the stats) but certainly not great. They did give up 7 sacks though so that is discouraging, but they also threw everything at the offense scheme-wise.

I wouldn't call Cal's secondary their weakness. They have a potential AA CB and another potental AC CB. Their DBs remind me of ours last year. They have big LBs so they may not be able to handle speed. I'd say their OL and QB play may be weaknesses.

Just for the record, I hadn't read any of this when I made my 5 predictions for the season. Man!!!!! I have a whopper of a sinking feeling right now...

Cutcliffe will go with the QB that gives the team the best chance of winning. At this point Crompton has outplayed Ainge in their first scrimmage.

Its early, but the Cal game is only 3 weeks away. Thats not a lot of time for Ainge to improve. Crompton is going to get more looks from the coaching staff after his scrimmage performance.

I wouldn't blame everything on the QBs now. I'm sure the OL, WRs, and defense had something to do with the failures at the passing game from today. I think we ended up with 3 passing TDs and 3 ints on the day with over 50% accuracy so that isn't as horrible as it sounds especially considering how good our DBs can be.

I see what you're saying, but pressure does that to QB's all the time. I just watched Vince Young lob one up for grabs. I'm not saying none of it is the QB's fault, Ainge definitely is still having growing pains. If worse comes to worse and Ainge isn't ready, then just put Crompton in and let's get ready for 2007.
