UTAD cutting band funding/involvement? (Merged)

This is what the players want. They want to wear anything but orange, they don't want the Pride to play in the stands, they want hip hop and rap to pump them up like a new uniform does. They're the ones playing, so it is all about them, and acceptable. There is a bit of sarcasm in this, but I brought up the question in the uniform thread about what would happen if the players didn't want the band or Rocky Top, and people said I was crazy and the uniforms are for one game only. Well, looky here.

This isn't about what the players want. This is about money. No traveling band saves money. Commercials during dead periods instead of the band makes money. Fewer band members in the stands = more tickets to sell which makes money.

Harts email is at the bottom, sent him one for what it's worth. This is total crap! So because the players make the school millions of dollars they can stay, but the band??? Ehhh sorry your done.

What the EEFFF is next stop painting the checker boards in the end zones to save money on damn paint!!?!!! UnEffing believable.

While Hart was still at Alabama, the recommendation was made to only send a pep band to the National Championship game. It took significant pressure from multiple sources to keep that from happening. When Hart was hired at UT, I made the aside that the same thing would happen here and was told it wouldn't happen.

It's not just happening here. Do you think Georgia just sent a pep band last week instead of the full band as a sign of disrespect?

So wait are they reducing the band or getting rid of it entirely??

Hence the sarcasm. But if you think that getting high rated players here because of the atmosphere of the "in" music that will be played like an NFL stadium won't influence it, you're crazy. I know it is mostly about money. But a better product because of better players that want to resemble NFL, (and the desire to be paid, etc) this crap happens.

This is an email I received from a member of The Pride

Fans,

A battle is upon us and we need your help. The athletics department is trying to cut the band from the stands. They have recently informed the Pride, which has been a Tennessee tradition for 144 years, that we will be limited in when and what we can play in the stands. Now instead of hearing classics like the Vol spellout, Living on a Prayer, and Neck you instead listen to "canned" music from the loudspeakers and be subjected to athletic marketing and commercials where you once had live music and cheers. Now the Pride will really only play when our team scores a touchdown, and that will only be Rocky Top instead of the school's actual fight song Down the Field. As much as we all love it, is it not a shame that the schools official fight song will not be played and that after Rocky Top has ended you again listen to canned music and watch commercials on the jumbotron? The athletics department has also limited band travel. That is why there will be no band at Missouri, why there was no band at Oregon, and why there will only be a pep band instead of the whole Pride at Kentucky. They are wanting to cut band travel so that they can save money. What they do not understand is that by saving this money they are cutting a valuable part of the college gameday experience. They are also hurting those students of The Pride. Though many may not think we are student athletes, we are on the field practicing at least 5 hours before actual kickoff, we are! Do these hardworking students not deserve the opportunity to experience this Tennessee Tradition to the fullest? We are in dire need of your help! Please help us keep this gameday tradition alive and help keep the Pride alive so that future generations can experience this wonderful and prestigious tradition.

This band member also told me that next year there is a chance that they will not be travelling to any away games in order to cut back on expenses.

You can email Dave Hart at athleticdirector@utk.edu and let him know how you feel about his decision.

Thank you and GBO!!

BB

for what it's worth, everyone seemed to be on board when Arian asked the band to hold on a minute while he was DJing. This was a logical step.

I really don't want to be listening to commercials the entire game. Horrible move if true. Also, no band at away games is just ridiculous. It can't actually save that much money.

Yeah, who wants to save $400,000 in a AD with no reserve money anyway?!

So they're not cutting out pregame or halftime? Living on a Prayer needs to go JMO. Also, saving money by not sending any band to some places is fine, and I doubt it will last once the AD budget gets under control. However, I think most people (rightfully so) would be absolutely opposed to cutting the size of the band or minimizing the band at Neyland.

Yea cause hearing an advertisement about Kroger at halftime is gonna make everyone run to the store for milk and cookies.

Advertisements are meant to be heard, not played over by a 300+ member band. If Kroger pays $5000 for an advertisement in the 3rd quarter, they expect it to be heard. ADT spent millions to have their name on our national championship trophy. Think they would've done it if their name wasn't mentioned every 5 secs?
