UTAD cutting band funding/involvement? (Merged)

So they're not cutting out pregame or halftime? Living on a Prayer needs to go JMO. Also, saving money by not sending any band to some places is fine, and I doubt it will last once the AD budget gets under control. However, I think most people (rightfully so) would be absolutely opposed to cutting the size of the band or minimizing the band at Neyland.

Agree completly with livin on a prayer, also just send a pep band to the away games is doable as well, but as for bowl games (which we will get to for u smart a$$es out there) is absurd. They should get to go for the work they put into the season as well. It would be a shame to go to a bowl game as a fan and not get to hear your fight song when you score. Jmo.

Yeah, who wants to save $400,000 in a AD with no reserve money anyway?!

It doesn't cost that much to put a bunch of college kids into a bus, and the ad revenue generated from a market of 102k people is almost nothing. Hell, they make more charging the students 10 bucks.

Advertisements are meant to be heard, not played over by a 300+ member band. If Kroger pays $5000 for an advertisement in the 3rd quarter, they expect it to be heard. ADT spent millions to have their name on our national championship trophy. Think they would've done it if their name wasn't mentioned every 5 secs?

Cause I'm sure you don't dvr the games and fast forward through their million dollar television advertisements? How's that working out for them??

I don't have cable, so no I don't. And being in the Communications field, I understand the advertising side of it, so I don't act like a douche about how it works.

If you could help me fast forward through the commercials and BS from a live event, then you are the man!

You can't, so ads are revenue.

It's already been cut quite a bit. It has to be supplemented with HS bands now just to equal in size of what it used to be. Look at old stadium pics and how much space band used to take up. It's a tragedy.

I've got an idea, lets have a concert in neyland and instead of listening to the band....lets play advertisements for the record label instead.

The people that come to live sporting events are being bombarded with ads all over the stadium, from the cups the drink out of, to seeing a dish network ad play every time there is a replay.....(yep I guess dish networks ads are really working.....I'm a direct tv customer)

Total BS!! The band helps keep the fans up during the game! If true say goodbye to singing rocky top, watching the vols run thru the T ,good pre game/halftime shows and all the other great traditions at Tennessee!! I know making the players happy is important but they need to make sure they make the people happy that are paying the bills ie the fans!

Living On Prayer is inappropriate now that Dools is gone.

I thought they added 30 in the last couple years.

It doesn't have to be supplemented with anyone. Just like the football team, the band has to find ways to draw in talent. What better way than having kids come in and give them a taste of marching in Neyland? Bama's band is bigger than the Pride and can't make a straight line. What's a tragedy is that people think size and talent are related. They aren't.

Condredge Holloway or David Blackburn should be strong considerations for athletic director.
Call me crazy, but look at Alabama, they keep their administration positions open to the people who know and respect the university. Dave Hart and Jimmy Cheek are neither. The only way to have success is to have people in administrative positions who know our university.

Great for you, want a cookie? You obviously don't understand how this stuff works, or else you wouldn't be making this many ridiculous arguments. Remove the Adidas logo from the uniforms and coaches' apparel and see how fast the AD loses that money.

They just want to see college kids act like they're riding each other on a football field like the Ohio band did a few years ago.

I love how we're adding in music over the loud speakers throughout each game, but the band is all a part of tradition. And if hearing Rocky Top right after a huge play doesn't get you pumped up in Neyland then I don't know what will.

Go read the comments on facebook. It's pretty clear the problem is "Livin' on a Prayer"

People have been saying this for years. I'll gurandamntee you if the band played "7 Nation Army" we aren't having this discussion. <--- Just kidding.

Sounds pretty legit. There is very little argument to the notion that high school and collegiate football players prefer popular music to marching bands

I could do without them during halftime but pregame & during the game they are awesome.

Who cares about living on a prayer being played? Serious question.

The only people that seem to care are those posting on here. When I was in it (when they first started playing it) the student section loved it. One of the few songs they actually got into.

Those are VISUAL ADVERTSIMENTS. I thought you'd figure that out communications guy (with no cable)

They don't impede on anything or cause a distraction or take away anything. However audible ads work slightly because when you start replacing certain parts of the game where there is normally music or commentary it takes away part of the sport that makes college football what it is.

The athletic department will start filling its coffers when we start winning more games filling the stands, and selling thousands and thousands more appareal. ADVERTSIMENTS in the stadium are a very small part of the revenue generating power of our university. They only have 6 home games numb nuts. They sell jerseys all year. They have tv ads all year.

I am just saying that I don't see the insane millions and billions of dollars they are going to generate by blairing a Kroger advertisement in place of a halftime show, or when we score a touchdown wouldn't it be awesome to jump up and down and give five the guy next to you while hearing about a life insurance quote you can get today!!!

Come on man, u really want ads in place of the band???

No, I don't. I marched 4 years and that's the last thing I want. But you started this by not understanding how the money flow would work by cutting the band, so I enlightened you about it. I marched in 07 when UK complained about us marching Circle Drill on their UK logo and half their board was talking about how much it sucked that their team came out after halftime to an Advance Auto Parts commercial. So, yes, advertisements in the stadium work because they remembered the actual commercial. That's the only point I was making. If I had my way, there'd be no piped music, only the band.
