'18 VA TE James Mitchell (Virginia Tech, potential transfer)

Not that is really matters but why did he drop so far in rankings? He was a consensus 4* and inside the 250. Now he's in the 300's. He has a strong offer list and reports are always positive about his abilities. Just curious if anyone had some insight?

Because he's seriously considering TN.

I would say little of both. But u had a walk on in bullard who was second best te

Think you meant Alex Ellis. Bullard was an OL.

Agree, We don't have any TE on the roster that can be a seam threat. Would have been nice to see what Croom could have done this year.

I think Pope could be a solid tight end. Remember he went to CAK. They throw the ball like 50 times a game and even though he was listed as a tight end, he always played out wide or in the slot. Which makes me think he was way behind in the blocking aspect of being a tight end. He is a redshirt freshman and still has some time to develop.

Not sure, but Mitchell might not have camped much this summer. So, out of sight, out of mind, maybe?

Devante Brooks.

What's funny is everyone at the time thought Wolf was just a decent 2nd TE to play with our great TE recruit Daniel Helm. Not to start a "stars don't matter" discussion again...

Wolf really wasn't under the radar though. He was a 4* on several sites and even the #5 TE in the country on Scout and he had a bunch of elite offers. He was very heavily recruited. Bama wanted him badly. The TE's we've signed since that class were not heavily recruited at all.

Is it that , or is it the game plan not utilizing TE like we thought they would when Butch was 1st hired?

I think they simply lack a big-time talent at TE and have struggled to land high end talent there. Butch's offense did an unreal job at Cincinnati utilizing Travis Kelce.

During the spring he still looked like he needed to add some more weight. I doubt we see much of him.

This. He's a pretty huge project. We have a lot of project "OT" types right now on campus. That's why I'd be surprised if they took a 4th OL in this class unless it's just a guy with an insane ceiling like Faalaele.

I guess I don't see why elite te are not knocking down the door help wanted sign is there lol

I'm hoping this year with Scott calling the plays, and being a former tight ends coach, that he will utilize Wolf a lot more. Wolf's hands aren't completely proven, but he's sure been wide open a lot the past 2 years.

I think we wanted to utilize our TEs more last year but Croom and Wolf were so inconsistent. Two of Dobbs INTs came from them handing the ball to a DB.

Isn't the "hardest working TE in college football" a freshman at UT, James Brown?

I'm pretty sure he was talking about Austin Pope, I read it like you did the first time though. Brooks is up to 280, then you've got Tatum, Niehaus, Ryan Johnson (who was a 4 star let's not forget) and Locklear. All are works-in-progress but I think they can all contribute at some point.

From what I heard about Pope out of HS is that he's very athletic. He's 6'4 230 on the roster, about the same size as Eli. I could see him fighting for time with Johnson and Eli.
