Vanilla Offense

He is going to have to this Saturday or the season is over (I think he will). Frankly, we should put TE out there and have him roll out once defender blitzes and hit the Tight End. Even if tackled at catch, that is going to be a 3-4 yard gain. They would have to back off the blitz to cover the TE and that will give us time. Having some of our WR do slants in would help as well. They are there within quick view of Nico and probably open. They will get positive yard (maybe not first down but 2-3 plays of that gets us there).
Insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results. So our O-line sucks? We need to adjust and run plays anyways. We won't win doing the offense "as is".

Yeah I totally didnt understand why he didnt bring the TE package forward like we did with OK.
Scheme 1: Stack the WRs and spread everyone wide to go downfield, go fast fast fast. if that stops working, shift to:
Scheme 2: Use the TEs to gash each side into the middle and then drop bombs on the side. if that stops working, shift to:
Scheme 3: UNLEASH SAMPSON/BISHOP right down their throat! BUT dont do this, till you have done the other 2 first.

Our offense is so PREDICTABLE right now!. Why cannot we (offensive coordinator and HC) call some non expected calls especially on 3rd down, or other situations where just the obvious is what is expected by opposing defenses? When we see 5,6,7, and even sometimes 8 men in the box on defense, why call a 20-40 yard pass, or a side pass that only gets you 4-7 yards most of the time? We NEVER, I mean NEVER call a screen pass that would obviously get multiple yards when you have that many men in the box!!! Our offensive play calling is VANILLA. I like VANILLA in ice cream but NOT in offensive schemes. I know we have the capability to do this, but Halzle is so predictable. Nico has got exposed in this crap play calling. We need to change offensive scheme bad or opposing defenses will eat our lunch, dinner and our VANILLA dessert. Time for changing the offense or the OC. This offense is not performing right now.
They can’t block anyone and the QB has played 6 games that’s why..

For those asking where the slants are, our offense is built to hit the outside guys and spread the defense from sideline to sideline to set up the runs up the middle. Throwing over the middle negates that impact. We need speed on the outside. Someone that can and will beat most corners deep in 1:1 coverage, we don’t have that.

Then it’s up to Heupel to reconfigure his offense to take advantage of what he does have. That’s what great coaches do.

Jonathan Crompton said Heupel and the staff really don’t trust Nico.
At times that's understandable. Nico had a man open to the left side of the field (at least briefly) on that last play but never gave him a look, and then ran out of bounds to his right. He looks indecisive at times. Like he's having to think too much, and not seeing the whole field.

Offense has to change if we are to beat Florida, Alabama, Kentucky, and Vandy. Should not have a problem with MSU.

I am hoping that’s due to inexperience

The play we kept throwing to squirrel were the other WR blocks for him? That’s a screen.

That’s not an out route.
Usually, a screen is the linemen releasing the DL and getting up field to block for a RB or WR, hence the name "screen". The ball carrier is screened from defenders by multiple downfield blockers. Throwing the ball to the boundary and having a 2v2 is not a screen or an out route, in my opinion, it's a quick out which in this offense is essentially a long handoff to the edge.

Agree to disagree.

Do we really need all of you guys telling everyone (hear that JH?) what plays
to run and when to use the TE's and when to throw screen passes, etc?
I thought that job was for Hazle or Josh. if those two don't know what plays
to run and when to run them, then we really are up Schitt's creek.

FWIW , Nico is not doing a really smart RPO. He has a lot to learn with the rpo. Making bad decisions.

The other WRs in this case are the people screening them. That’s why they block on the play. An out route would mean the WR breaks outward toward the sideline. There’s no out cut on these plays.

It’s a screen. No different than a “bubble screen”, which also has 0 offensive linemen involved

I will say that Heath Shuler would have been perfect for this offense. A fast and physical runner, with a great deep ball and velocity. That's what we need.

The fact that you keep confusing “out route” where a WR actually runs a route, and a “quick out” where the WR basically stands still and has the ball thrown to him quickly after the snap tells me you are not reading or thinking through what I’m saying. Too stubborn.

I hear what you’re saying, but that’s not a screen because the defense is not outnumbered, it’s a 2v2 situation. Man against man.

I’ll also say that UT hasn’t run many, if any, bubble screens.

Our five or six offensive plays are getting very familiar with the world of college football. Here we go. 1. Sampson off tackle left 2. Sampson off tackle right 3. Pass to extreme flat left side. 4. Pass to extreme right side. 5. long pass out of bounds................never any toss sweeps, pass plays over the middle, don't know what a screen pass is to a tight end ! In other words my grandaughter can tell you what our next offensive play will be. Our offensive play calling is so terrible I will not be surprised to see us lose several more games. Run run run up the middle. All we know is to run the ball. Yes, you can set up the run by throwing the ball also. No, i never played a down of football due to a torn up knee playing baseball . However , I have watched Tennessee football about 65 years. If we do not open up our offense and not be so predictable we are in for a long year.
Also need a Utah/shovel pass, QB draw, bootleg pass/run option, RB chip/flat pass ...

It takes 2 years for a QB to really open up this offense. Hooker was in his 2nd in 22 and he was a 6th year player. Maybe Nico can learn to run when he should and throw when he should.

Thinking too much.. He needs to take a look one way or maybe another, if it isn't open go get what you can get with your legs then get down. Be smart about it. He could of had a lot of yards running Saturday. For whatever reason they didn't run him or tell him to run.. Maybe it was up to him. They got to get him right if that is the case. Held the ball too long, didn't run when he needed too. He was a lot of the issue Saturday.
