Vanilla Offense

Needs too. We need that guy that can push a pile. That's one of my gripes with Heupel. He doesn't have that back right now that can get him those tough yards. Sampson is good but he isn't real big. Need that tommy knocker back when you need 3 yards and a cloud of dust..

Our offense is so PREDICTABLE right now!. Why cannot we (offensive coordinator and HC) call some non expected calls especially on 3rd down, or other situations where just the obvious is what is expected by opposing defenses? When we see 5,6,7, and even sometimes 8 men in the box on defense, why call a 20-40 yard pass, or a side pass that only gets you 4-7 yards most of the time? We NEVER, I mean NEVER call a screen pass that would obviously get multiple yards when you have that many men in the box!!! Our offensive play calling is VANILLA. I like VANILLA in ice cream but NOT in offensive schemes. I know we have the capability to do this, but Halzle is so predictable. Nico has got exposed in this crap play calling. We need to change offensive scheme bad or opposing defenses will eat our lunch, dinner and our VANILLA dessert. Time for changing the offense or the OC. This offense is not performing right now.
Everyone knows chocolate is way better.

First pass of the Florida game will be a 30 yard horizontal pass to someone in the flats.. probably squirrel.

Remember that beautiful play against Mizzou in 22 when Jalen hid behind the OT and then went down the field uncovered for a TD. It was a work of beauty. Haven't seen it since.
please god tell me #22 isn't replacing #98, as our only bragging right?

One of our issues is we are allowing safeties to get to close to the LOS and provide run support. Almost every play we ought have somebody running a deep sidelines or post pattern. Then you can exploit the underneath right over the linebackers heads with cutters. We were doing something like this rather consistently early and have given up on it.

Exactly...............somebody must remind Heupel of this play. Long forgotten because all he knows is run run run ! Being a quarterback himself looks like he would understand the need to be more open with his offensive calling...........or better yet , hire a real offensive coordinator. I give Arky's OC credit for the win Saturday !!!! They were very unpredictable, in my opinion. That is why they won.

Flat out reason is because our two tackles couldnt hold the line and so Nico was getting rushed and never had time to get it downfield. Then he started getting flustered.

TN Offense depends absolutely on being able to beat the opposing Defense with 6 on 6. If they bring 7 or 8 we punish them downfield. But when we cant contain the rush because our OLine looked like a bunch of whales wallowing about, bad things happen.

I think because the tackles are just coming back from injury and havent played, CJH cant dial up anything other than the most basic vanilla stuff because our OL isnt in sync yet.
This Heard and Campbell are not healthy and Davis is no where close to a band aid so we had to play them. Nico is more of a pocket passer that is mobile than a dual threat. I don’t think anyone noticed but we aggressively recruit Tackles

Exactly… we’re going to be vanilla as long as we’re trying to cover up O-line issues. It was unbelievable how much trouble we had picking up blitzes and running against 5 and 6 men in the box.

We’ve ran multiple screen passes to the TE this year.

The play squirrel got hurt on was over the middle.

Running up the middle has been very successful. We averaged over 6ypc Saturday running up the middle
Yep, we ran it successfully against NC State. My question is, why not have those short routes when they're focusing on taking away intermediate and long routes.

That and penalties kept us playing from behind the sticks much of the night.
All this & Nico is playing like a Freshman and he has a right to he's a RS Freshman. I plus a lot of others thought he would be dynamic. I even thought he'd be better than HH, maybe he will down the road but certainly not this year as I thought. He's middle of the road SEC QB so far. I was wrong and admit it. In a QB driven league this is not a good trend going forward.

If you think about it, Nico is a freshman who really hasn't played a lot ,so it really makes you wonder how we went from entering the season with an unproven qb and off the bat we're rated good, then get praise for beating cup cake teams. Suddenly we're talking Heisman a for Nico and play offs for the Vols. We were over rated and need to come down to earth

The SCREEN pass I am referring to is the one where you let the defensive tackle and guard on either the right or left side come on through after your halfback has cleared through the line or out in the flat and your guards and tackles are pulling the way your halfback is running out in front of him. That usually gets 5-7 yards when the defense is crowding the line.

Tired of the 25 yard pass to the sideline for the WR screen.
