Venting on today's young parents

Yep ... I hate to break it to the old guys, but kids are the same as 50 years ago. They just have more options.

Right. Even though there are more ways to get in trouble, there are more ways to get caught misbehaving (track kids with cell phones, see what they are up to on social media, etc.). It kinda balances itself out.

Kids today are a lot more arrogant than it seemed like they were 30 years ago.

Just remember not all young parents are like that. I had my son at 20, became a homeowner at 21, and at 23 I own a successful small business. Don't let the actions of a few judge us all.

Us southwestern Virginians are the exception to most rules.

You are right and if anything the kids today are smarter. Kids can learn about anything they want in depth now in ways that were flat out impossible when I was a kid. They have much more diverse interests and abilities simply because they have so knowledge on tap.

Around here at least, they still ride bikes, have roving "gun fights (nerf or airsoft), and they still climb trees.

Maybe we were a bit more rough and tumble in my day, but that is because stupid crap like having a neighborhood wide dirt clod fight was a viable option for us while building a robot wasn't.

I'm sure if you go back 2000 years, people will be lamenting about how "todays new parents are irresponsible and will be the reason our civilization fails".

Sad thing is...eventually someone gets it right. Just patronize until you're eventually right.

My kids are pretty tech savvy but at the same time I teach them a lot about the outdoors and surviving in the wild. They can shoot well (guns and bows) and understand the complexities of technology. My last step is to teach them how to knife fight.

SN: I have two boys ages 8 and 11.

Yes! I had mine in hapkido until my wife got so bad, but I work with them at least 3 days a week. Punching, kicking, choke holds, breaking holds. Plus, my 15 and 10 year olds know how to shoot. I may be over zealous with some of this stuff, but they are all girls and I see to many stories to not do something to help them.

It's nice that they could knock bullies on their arses. It's good when Kids are taught to take care of themselves.:rock:

I agree with Coug. I don't allow my 12 year old around adults that I don't trust or that I don't have a number for. If my child needs a phone I have a pre-paid phone that they can use but must return to me when they get back.

Kids having their nose in electronics causes social issues for that child. They tend to be non social.

Social media is one of the worst things a child can have. There are uncounted missing kids that have met their captors online posing as a child wanting to meet. Also, kids are idiots. My wife lost her 16 year old sister in a car accident at the beginning of November. Seeing the 16 year old boy that was driving and some of his moron friends post online is disturbing. He has no filter online and is possibly facing charges in her and another boys death, you know that the D.A. is looking into it. All of it can come back to haunt you.

Then you have cyber bullying going on and businesses going online to see how a person really is. Social media can be useful but can be detrimental as well.

Blaming technology is easy and convenient but the real problem rests with lazy, incompetent parents who produce children susceptible to such peril.

So because you didn't it must not have happened.

No, I most definitely never said that. Heck, these two kids in my middle school class decided to get high on multiple Xanax pills right there in the middle of class one day. They both passed out on their desks naturally. It was so obvious the teacher woke them up and dragged them to the principles office.

Get them in a karate class also:rock:

I learned some pretty helpful, lifelong defense moves from karate classes when I was little. They also stress only to use karate defensively and never aggressively. It's a great class for youth and even adults.

Yeah, the only way to break the cycle is education and technology.

I believe it's cultural, I don't have a solution to fixing it. You don't see it nearly as much in any other country of the world.

*I've determined that I am too irresponsible personally to have children, so I've resolved to not have any until I get my sh!t together. Even then, I hate children so I doubt I'll have any... More people need to be like that.
