Very high odds Malzahn will not be Auburn’s coach in 2020

The loss to Georgia dropped Gus Malzahn to 2-6 as a head coach against the Bulldogs. He lost to LSU earlier this season and now is 2-5 against LSU. Auburn plays Alabama in 12 days; Malzahn hopes to improve upon his 2-4 record as a head coach against Alabama.

It’s becoming difficult for even the most optimistic Auburn fan to believe this program can rise above its most high-profile rivals with Malzahn in charge. His dismissal almost happened last year and many guardrails are gone that kept that from happening. The “power” people are adamant that this is Malzahn’s last year.

Only speculation, but no reliable info on replacement.

I think he'll be back when Auburn upsets Tualess Alabama

They say water eventually settles at its proper level. Seems like he would be at his proper level at Arkansas.

I don't think Auburn wants to outright fire him because they would still owe Gus a boatload of money.

Best case scenario is for Auburn to quietly let it be known they will waive any buyout if anyone wants to hire Gus.

Sounds like he is about where Fulmer was in 2008. Except I do not think he has had a losing season.

Even if Bama is favored, I’m not sure it’s much of an upset. Honestly, Auburn should win that game. The absence of Tua puts more pressure on Gus to get it done.

With how bad Auburn's offense is it would be an upset

Don’t think they can do much better. That freshmen QB needs more time.

If Auburn beats Bama they'll be 9-3 and people will be disappointed.

The crazy thing is there schedule includes 5 Top 10 opponents (LSU, UGA, Bama, Oregon, UF) and 6 Top 25 (TAMU).

A win against Bama would give them as 2/5 against the Top 10 and 3/6 vs Top 25.

I get why people want to get rid of Gus but that schedule with a true freshman QB is brutal.

Auburn fans may have unrealistic expectations, but they also see the trend with Gus. They know that his quarterbacks tend to get worse from year to year. They know his mean is 8-5. If Auburn beats a depleted Bama squad Gus will almost certainly be back, but a great number of Auburn fans are going to look at it as a Pyrrhic victory.

Bama's offense struggled against UT and Miss State after Tua left the game. Auburn is much better defensively than those two teams. Auburn also has home field.
Bama will be favored. Bama will lose. Then, what do you do with Gus? Powers that be don't think beating Bama every 2-3 years is enough. Barn D is salty stout.
Offense is, aah, shall we say, inconsistent. I don't hear from very many AU fans (none) who want him back. And they been playin that tune for last 4 years.

I understand Auburn fans frustrations with Malzahn but who are you going to get that’s a significant upgrade? A Rhule or Campbell would probably be upgrades but would they come to the pressure cooker that is Auburn? I definitely don’t think it’s a given and if you fall back to a coordinator or a lower tier coach you run the risk of falling even further behind Bama and LSU. Auburn is taking a huge gamble imho

Auburn would be dumb to fire him, and Gus would be dumb to stay, because eventually he WILL get fired. He's on a perpetual hot seat. He needs to reset his clock at Arkansas. A win over Bama would be the perfect way to cap his career on the Plains and start over somewhere else. He would basically be unfireable for about 5 years at Arkansas given their roster and his previous results. They would give him time to go to work.

Only Auburn would be dumb enough to fire the coach that’s beaten Saban more than anyone. Compound that with the fact that they have their QB set for at least the next 2 years and that’s just extra stupid. If I’m Gus I wouldn’t quit, I’d take my firing and make them pay every cent of that buyout for being ungrateful. There was no way they were getting through that gauntlet of a schedule this year. The only game I think they shouldn’t have lost or probably was more of a tossup was the UF game. In theory they probably could play 3 playoff teams and the point differential is -4 and a 1-2 record.

He hasn’t done anything to get fired this year IMO. If he beats Alabama he’s definitely coming back. Losing to 2 potential playoff teams and beating another potential playoff team along with losing to another top 10 team isn’t worthy of firing. They’ve had a brutal schedule this year and if they end the season with wins over Oregon and Alabama that’s a successful season in my book.

Agreed. They have 3 losses by a combined 21 points to the #1, #4, and #11 teams in the CFP rankings, and beat the potential Pac 12 Champion. Beat Alabama and then you get fired? That's a terrible look....so it will probably happen.

The problem is that this is the best Auburn defense they have had in years and they lose just about all of it next season. The only reason they were in those games was due to the defense and not his offense. Many see Gus as the issue with the ongoing problems on offense which hasnt been isolated to this year. If he is still the coach next season, look for them to struggle to win 7 games.
