Very high odds Malzahn will not be Auburn’s coach in 2020

Gus is going to take the FSU job.

Why wouldn’t he? I don‘t what know his ultimate motivations are, but if it’s winning another National Title, the easiest path to doing that is FSU. You still have to play Clemson and Florida, but I would trade conference games with Bama, UGA, LSU, even aTm for Clemson each year. You have a pretty decent chance of being in the CFP discussion going into the Florida game. If you’re Florida State and you’re living up to the potential that exists there, you should always at least be going to a NY6 game.

Auburn is such an interesting program because their fans are upset, and I get it, but they should consider this...how easy would it be for Auburn to have been like Tennessee during this period of unprecedented success by their in-state rival?

Since Saban showed up at Alabama, Auburn has beaten him 4 times, won a national title and played for another one, won the SEC twice and played for another one, had a Heisman winner, and has only had one losing season. I would kill, kill, for Tennessee to have had marks like that over the same time frame.

If in 2007 you somehow knew in advance Saban was going to be as successful as he has been, you couldn't be faulted for thinking Auburn's program would be totally vaporized, but it has not.

I agree. That’s why it has to be so frustrating for Gus. Auburn fan’s are probably the most delusional in the country. There are unrealistic fan bases and then there is Auburn. Gus has won a National Title (yeah Chiz was coach, but come on ) played for another, won an SEC title and played for another. If Auburn plays the long game here I think they are in good shape, but they’re like day traders when it comes to coaches. They are obsessed with everything Bama, I get it, but that’s their undoing. That’s why I think if Gus moves somewhere else they go get Freeze. He‘s the only other coach other than Dabo that’s had success against Saban.

Before I start to critique Auburn, I think about what we'd do in the same situation though. People say the same thing about Tennessee "running through" coaches, but what's our alternative? Is there anybody out there who seriously thinks we should have kept Dooley or Butch for longer?

They do like to run through coaches, but when you examine it more closely I kind of see why. Even going back to Tuberville. I think they initially wanted to force him out too early, but by the time they actually did, he needed to go. Auburn was slipping badly and Saban had emerged as a force at Alabama. The decision to fire Chiz was a no-brainer, even with the magical season they had 2 years before. 3-9, 0-8 in the SEC, 49-0 loss to Alabama, team had totally given up. Now here they are with Gus, who has actually managed to stay 7 years.
