Very high odds Malzahn will not be Auburn’s coach in 2020

Agree.. no one wants Gus at Aburn any more..they are going thru the motions to finish this season off...
They wanted him gone last year and reworked his contract to make it easier to get rid of him this year....
Arky is salivating at the snoot waiting for this to happen so they can back the Brinks truck up and get him..
He would have 5 years there with no real pressure to win the west or be competing for a Natty...
He can relax and bank his money then retire when Arky starts to pressure him...

I understand Auburn fans frustrations with Malzahn but who are you going to get that’s a significant upgrade? A Rhule or Campbell would probably be upgrades but would they come to the pressure cooker that is Auburn? I definitely don’t think it’s a given and if you fall back to a coordinator or a lower tier coach you run the risk of falling even further behind Bama and LSU. Auburn is taking a huge gamble imho
Rhule just signed a new contract thru 2028 last month. Speculation is that there stipulations in it for Penn St and NFL jobs, otherwise the buyout will be astronomical.

I wouldn't take the Auburn job either if I were him. He has it made at Baylor. Easier conference and a very fertile recruiting ground but some coaches have huge egos that get in the way of good decisions.

Gus's problem is that he adds no value. He's supposedly an offensive guru. His defenses are always good but his offenses on some level are always inconsistent (either from season to season or game to game). His bread and butter, offense is 100% why the team underachieves. Auburn fans have very high expectations and an inferiority complex with Alabama (and LSU to a lesser extent), but I understand why they are frustrated.

IMO, Gus's offenses are predicated way too much on misdirection, fakes, and generally trying to fool defenses. They aren't predicated on moving a defensive front 7 against their will. When he plays against a defense that is well-prepared and well-studied in what Auburn is trying to do, their offenses are generally contained or outright stopped. They are also way too heavily reliant on outstanding (not just good, but outstanding) QB play. Also, he never seems to have a plan B. Gus runs what he has and if he gets stopped, oh well, he gets stopped that day.

This year, Auburn has allowed 24 to Florida, 23 to LSU (with an elite offense), and 21 to Georgia, yet lost all 3 games. That's gotta be really frustrating.

You nailed the prevailing thinking of majority of Auburn football fans. Similar to many SEC schools, Auburn is football and football is Auburn. That said, the BOT looks at Auburn from 30,000 ft. and 8-4 seasons are okay. They are more interested in upgrading football facilities than paying Gus’ buyout ($25M as of January).

The state of his tenure ebbs and flows. Whereas as a few days ago he was almost gone due to pressure of Yellawod man and others, it now appears he will return in 2020.

Gotta love the D Kevin Steele plays. Many I hear say give Gus the boot, slide Steele over as HC. You retain at least half your staff. Plug and play. Barn should finish 8-4 after they lose to Bama. They're shaping up to have a nice looking recruiting class coming in. Hire a new OC (Mike Bobo?) and maybe you don't fall off the cliff production wise. If they can put a decent defense on the field, very likely they can get to 9 wins in 2020 before they face LSU and Bama.

makes no sense to fire Gus, if there is a nice looking recruiting class coming in -- Gus had bad luck with some 5 stars being busts just like Fulmer did --- firing him now would set them back just like it did UT

I think the concern of AU boosters is that Gus is setting the program back

Auburn will beat Bama without Tua. Malzahn has an incredible knack for winning every single game needed to keep his job. If Malzahn were always coaching for his job, he'd go 12-0 every year! Other than Bo Pelini (who eventually got fired after year 7), I can't think of a single coach who has won "just enough" to always keep his job better than Malzahn.

Auburn needs to just learn they're Auburn and accept 9 wins as a fantastic season

Auburn has the weirdest luck of any football program.

The worst coach they've hired in the past 40 years is the one who won a national title (Gene Chizik). And the 2nd worst coach might've won a national title if they hadn't been on probation (Terry Bowden).

They tend to pull off miracles just when everyone thinks they'll fire their coach (see 2005 and 2017). They only coaches to not have at least 1 undefeated season since 1981 are probably their 2 best coaches in that time frame (Pat Dye and Gus Malzahn). It's a program that doesn't make any logical sense.

Though, I think the real secret to this mystery is that their 2 best coaches happened to coach at a time when Alabama was great. Pat Dye coached against Gene Stallings and Malzahn has been forced to coach against Nick Saban. And Auburn, no matter what they do, is always 2nd in the state of Alabama. When Bama is good, Auburn is never going to win the top recruits in the state.

Ultimately, this is Malzahn's real problem. I think he's a very good coach but he's never going to get Auburn above Nick Saban's Bama no matter how good he is.

left out the 2004 Tuberville undefeated team ( some Auburn fans claim the NC that year since USC vacated )

Why would Gus wanna go to Arkansas? I mean he can't get it done with these highly rated recruits coming to Auburn. Does Arkansas want 5-7, 6-6 type seasons or something? Are they begging for those seasons?
