BSU says no to 21-gun salute to veterans | Local News | Idaho Statesman

Boise State University has turned down a request from veterans for a 21-gun salute on campus Monday to mark Veterans Day, saying it might scare bystanders still spooked by school shootings in other states.

But "having a 21-gun salute in today's environment in the middle of classes didn't seem to be an appropriate way to celebrate" Veterans Day, BSU spokesman Frank Zang said. He cited a student shooting rampage at Virginia Tech University last April that killed 33, including the gunman, and said students and staff might not realize gunshots are part of a ceremony and are safe.

"Gunfire on campus in the middle of the day would not be prudent or appropriate for safety and security," Zang said.

a 21-gun salute sound wholly different than a running gun battle or a random shooter taking shots. It's also not as if you have a gaggle of disparate parties popping off a few rounds in unison. It's a well organized production complete with uniforms, flags, marching in formation, and so on.

I find it hard to believe that in the closed environment of a University Campus word of a military 21-gun salute couldn't be heard far and wide (campus post office?) and thus you'd have no "startled bystanders".

Can't recall of the last time I heard a 21 gun salute scaring the whatevers out of a campus or organization. Whatever.

Stuff like this drives me crazy; it is no way a discredit to our military personnel.

The issue is the reaction on campus, no matter how much you educate the staff and students someone is not going to know what is going on.

We all know what a 21 gun salute is and stand for. That does not mean the average person does. The administration is going on what they think is the best for the Campus as a whole. Dr. Kustra was the president of the University I went to and he in no way discredits the military. (Personal experience)

I know what went on at Virginia Tech and I in no way blame any one for the precaution BoiseState is taking.

Be so difficult to warn people ahead of time of this salute? Good way to test their communication skills perhaps?

Yeah... kind of like a fire drill. If they botch up the communications preceeding a 21 Gun Salute, they will have something to practice if a real shooter is on campus...

Then that is an indictment on our society today if you have 18-22 year olds that have no idea what a 21 gun salute is... or how fallen soldiers are honored.

That is not the fault of are military personnel but the school adminstration has to react to what is given.

The above mentioned scenario is another topic altogether.

So you're telling me that an email to every staff member, student and employee a week ahead of time would not be enough warning? I honestly don't even see the need for that but I would find it more than OK if they felt the need to do it. The standard now is that everyone must be fully aware and knowledgeable about what is going to transpire or else it can't transpire?

No, not at all.........it is silly to think it would be.

You are judging the standard on how you would react..........

It goes far beyond what most on the board are thinking about.

This goes to legal issues if something were to happen...........who is at fault....what could or should have happened........

It is what we given........

Adapt, improvise and overcome!

I would think there is some precedent for 21 gun salutes. I mean I bet they have occurred 1000s of times and I am unaware of where anyone freaked out?
