Pence has a run-out-the-clock, “aw shucks“ speaking style. It allowed him to seamlessly avoid the question about preexisting conditions and in turn ask Harris his own question. In a normal debate, that’s a good style. It’s methodical and careful. Avoiding the traps. The problem is that it’s boring and when you have to make up ground, being a boring gentlemanly-type doesn’t do that. Rs will think they won, Ds will think that they won, both sides made points they wanted to make and both got caught a little on some issues. Nothing that will move the needle either way.

If you are talking about undecideds, which is all that matters, Pence clearly won. Just like with that group Biden won the first debate against Trump.
