Pence has a run-out-the-clock, “aw shucks“ speaking style. It allowed him to seamlessly avoid the question about preexisting conditions and in turn ask Harris his own question. In a normal debate, that’s a good style. It’s methodical and careful. Avoiding the traps. The problem is that it’s boring and when you have to make up ground, being a boring gentlemanly-type doesn’t do that. Rs will think they won, Ds will think that they won, both sides made points they wanted to make and both got caught a little on some issues. Nothing that will move the needle either way.
If you are talking about undecideds, which is all that matters, Pence clearly won.
