Dooley was able to recruit some pieces here and there but overall, top to bottom, his recruiting classes were sorely lacking and he depended way too much on "diamonds in the rough," especially on the defensive side of the ball. He failed to recruit one single impact player on the defensive line or in the secondary. He also failed to recruit a dominant running back in the 3 years he was coach. It also remains to be seen if he recruited a quality QB while he was here.
News flash brainiac: we haven't done **** since Fulmer was booted. You would think even with the ability to see how terrible we've done since Fulmer has been gone that you'd have the common sense to take your idiotic opinions that got us into this mess into hiding.

Dooley's best recruits were receivers. Makes sense, since he played that position at UVA, coached that position at LSU, the Dolphins, and his curent gig in Dallas. That's the one area where it appears he truly recognized talent and properly evaluated it.
I beleive his "diamonds in the rough," as you accurately phrased it, were a by-product of his time at La. Tech. In that conference, you can take overlooked players (1, 2 and low 3-star guys) and get some mileage out of them. Of course, if he treated other HS coaches the way he treated Tennessee HS coaches, it's a wonder any of them ever gave him the time of day.
That was just one player man. Recruiting is the issue if he did a good job recruiting we wouldn't have to recruiting over every position on the team. We wouldn't have had walk-ons in the two deep. Dooley was a horrible coach and marginal recruiter.
Don't forget under CDD players were allowed to "check off" S&C instead of actually doing it as a team, pushing each other (per Juwan James).
S&C is nice on paper but it is much more effective when it is actually done!
Didn't dooley have like close to a 20 players less than the allowed 85 when he started?? And a scholly penalty?? R people really just totally incapable of understanding the difficulty of that time compared to CBJs first yr?? Horrible coach huh?? Well CBJ didn't really do better than him in his first year and last year's D was almost as bad as the year before soooooo CBJ a horrible coach too bud?? Oh wait he's 4-way shared conference championships so he gets it. Smh.
I frankly can care less about a bunch of whiny butthurt HS coaches that didn't have the talent but wanted a guy with bigger fish to fry to call them back.
Man CBJ lucked out by being able to show off that finalized workout room instead of just having to show a video of what it's going to look like.

I may be wrong but wasnt this this mainly a chuck smith issue that end up getting him fired?? Also isn't there a period during the year that the HC can not have contact with players and only the S&C coach can??
I love how there are so many people that seem like they have no experience in the corporate world, and act like the head guy knows what's going on all the time. Now what is done once he finds out is a different story.
It's what this country has come to after a corporation is blamed because a girl in a drive thru spills coffee on some lady.

Correct on the no contact aspect and a good Strength coach is pivotal.
Not correct on Chuck, he was not S&C coach, d-line I believe and after the UNC debacle he was gone. The o-line was still just checking off lists for the the next year per some interview. We have been through so many I have lost count but I think the guy ended up at Texas which doesn't surprise me.
One final thing, I work in the corporate world in a company similar in size to UT athletic program and I am aware of how everything is running as Dooley should have been. He had more of a knack for finding a way to lose than any person I have ever seen. He was a terrible motivator and you could see that his players and his employees. Also, his communication was pathetic which ultimately leaves him disconnected and ineffective to lead.
I cannot say where we are going with Butch yet as season one looked strikingly similar to Dooley's first year with the exception of SC and Vandy games and no bowl. In meeting I like him much more and the recruiting is coming together.
Also, the UT PR machine sunshine pumpers produce these videos every year and they have no reflection on our performance. This also can be said for Inky and his comments as who wants to win has the most heart or whatever...talent first then heart or will to win. As much heart as Inky has is still can't fix his nerve damage and it virtually the same example.
