Views on Recruiting Class

I'm not into making excuses. This is Tennessee, we have a tradition of winning...er...had might be more appropriate.

Of the top 25 recruiting classes (based on 247 Composite ranking) we come in at 25 despite posting the 24th worst record over the last 5 years. We are the only school in the top 25 with a losing record 4 out of the past 5 years.

In addition to the fact that Dooley and Co. seemed to have done very little recruiting over the past year, Tennessee has absolutely zero momentum. The 2013 recruits were in 8th grade during this downward spiral, so the tradition they know is much different than mine.

They see a team that loses to UK and Vandy and Mizzou, Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina...everyone in our division.

That's a lot to overcome in a month.

I'm as disappointed as anyone that a few players didn't choose us...but given our record and all the coaching changes which directly effect the relationships required to recruit talent...I think we're pretty lucky to be top 25, it could have been, probably should have been much worse. I'm not saying we made up any ground on Alabama, we didn't.

And inherited a #10 class when he was hired.

And is widely seen as the coach that helped win the title a few years ago with Scam Newton and that "flashy" offence, and was involved with the league and recruiting in the south since before he was at AU before, etc....And its Auburn...do we really want to use them as a benchmark program? That crap they run is so gimmicky and they won fewer games last year than we did! One hit wonders imo. We will out recruit them soon enough, just be patient.

B+ imo. Especially considering four losing seasons out of the last 5.

Awbarn could point to a NC 3 years ago.

I agree with you. My point was that using the "but Auburn had a #10 class" argument is ignorant.

DB, QB, WR, DE, TE.

3 OL was good but imo needed 1 more.

RB, LB, and DT's are going to have to be priorities next year. OL will probably be alittle heavy too.

wow. We probably loaded up enough to push for a Big East title, but not the BCS game representative. We make it all work at it's optimum and we'll get to a bowl game in Shreveport, or some such exotic locale.

For this program right now, a bowl game in Shreveport would be progress for next season. I hope you are correct that we go to a bowl in Shreveport.

I agree. This is not a national champion class.

Did you expect it to be?

that has nothing to do with next year. I said if we make it work to its optimum and this group won't reach its optimum next year.

I expect at UT to be middlin SEC at worst. If circumstances made that too hard for a coach out of nowhere, we should have looked elsewhere and harder. It isn't a Butch Jones problem, it's an administration problem. I hope Jones is this dream coach 'em up guy that this forum keeps pretending he'll be, then we'll climb some ladder over several years and eventually begin competing respectably with outfits like SCe and Ole Miss again. That 5 year crawl sounds awesome to me.

Same here BigPapa...same here.

But maybe, just maybe, he is that coach and it wont take but two or three. At this point all we can do is hope.

Drinking helps too.

You can tell the sunshine and lollipops crowd by the complete, unquestioned acceptance of anything that comes out the coach at the time's mouth.

31 days to build relationships is not true. They had already recruited many of the same guys while at Cincy, Auburn and here (Graham). Some of our existing roster they recruited at Cincy and Auburn as well. They just all got on the same page together at UT.They all said that UT was an easy sale, it sold itself.

Many of the best recruits were not convinced Jones/staff are going to make it or are strong enough to coach them up the best they could be. Fact, not conjecture. If the coaches prove themselves the recruiting will improve.

So it went as I expected. I predicted #25-30 several months back. The average ranking from all 4 major services is in that range. So they did OK, they beat Fulmer's '08. They retained some good ones from Dools' efforts and got some others on their own.

Did you guys know that Butch had only one month to recruit? Because he did. Only one month guys. Guys? It was only a month.

Right, that's nice. Fact is the class is 11th in the SEC and mediocre any way you spin it. He'll do better next year, just win some games butch.

"But he only had one month!"

Same as Malzahn at Auburn and they came in #11 in the nation

I agree that Butch has things under control but for some reason otger can't see that. Dooley didn't even bother to contact some of the highly vauled recruits that Butch was in on in less then 2 months time. He did a good job. I think our next class will be top ten easily.

In the SEC??????????

You guys need to give Butch more time. He did well for only being here a short time. Next year we will get some of those battle players that we lost this year. Butch may not be the ultimate answer, but he will get us back in the right direction. He is much better than Dooley if nothing else.

Agree with you 100%! My god, he's been the Vol coach for what, a month and a half and people are already wanting his head. . .here's the deal - went on Go Vols Xtra and they had a poll about what we thought of the class. 81% of the respondents gave either a B+, B. B-, C+, or C. That's fair!! The people (in the vast minority) who gave him a D or F (or for that matter an A+) ought to have their heads examined. For UT to be in the top 25 after the last three seasons, and with a coach who only had 32 days to recruit is astonishing. . .if we would have got the DB who went to the Buckeyes we would have been in the top 15. C'mon people let's be realistic. . .The UT Orange cup is always half full for me. . .and I think we're going to get back to where we need to be. . .Top Ten shooting for an SEC Championship each year. Go Vols!!!

Total class=D
The lack of defensive linemen, line backers and running backs have killed this class....I'll give a B to the skilled positions, but a D over all

Interesting perspective.

I see the 25 rank as more or less a push. 50th or 5th would have had more predictive value.

In the spirit of emphasis on the positive, I'll also point out that CBJ landed higher ranked classes at Cincy than Kelly. That's the best I can do for now.
