Vitello Agrees to Contract Extension

Congrats to Tony and all the other head coaches that got extensions. Despite the football program being a complete dumpster fire, we had a great year in athletics. I’m happy Danny White released the news for all the coaches at the same time. He’s trying to give all the programs exposure and make it feel like a family. Great job by him.

“Tennessee was one of three Division I schools to reach the NCAA tournament in men's and women's basketball, men's and women's golf, men's and women's tennis, rowing, softball and baseball. Eleven Tennessee teams finished the season ranked in the top 25 nationally.”

Hey,Phil

I mean, based on what we know it seems like Vitello is the highest paid coach in the country.
Correct. And am i wrong that i have heard that almost all of the 30 million has been raised for stadium upgrades, and locker rooms and seat expansion has already been promised?

I think that’s a fair assessment, contract will come out, just a matter of time, we’ll see…we waited this long.

Yeah i heard there may have been around 25 million promised. Hope is true.

I apologize for my skepticism but these upgrades have been talked about for a VERY long time. As CTV has stated, they don’t have to happen all at once, and if I was a betting man, I am not, I bet Sexton built this into the contract.

I been wrong before, but we’ll see soon enough…I reckon.

So, when do we think we’ll start working on Tony’s next extension? The most recent one is almost 24 hours old. Think they’ve thought about this at all yet? Hope Danny’s not gonna drop the ball on this… 😬

Coach V was on Sports Talk with Jimmy and Vince. Fantastic interview touching upon the MLB Draft, his new contract extension, and the future of the program.

  • Went in depth on a few guys including Spikes, House, Burns, and also talked a bit about Dooney (suggested that he would benefit from getting the college experience).
  • Went in depth about Leath, Hunley,Russell, Lipicus, and Walsh.
  • Talked about the future of the program and how the coaches and players need to, and will, become more active in the community to keep the momentum going, and continue growing the fan base and program.
  • Talked about how the goal for next year’s team is not increasing the win total , but upholding the standard and culture set by this year’s team.
  • Re: his extension - he was pleased with the increased pool of money for his staff …how it provides a shield for them would deter other programs from poaching),
I thought this was a particularly insightful interview about the future of the program and about the overall state of Tennessee athletics. I think we are great hands with Coach V as our head coach.

Making an amount of money that’s embarrassing to talk about! 🤣 TV’s interviews are classic.

Latest KNS article by Mike Wilson: How Tennessee baseball fans gave Tony Vitello a 'seal-the-deal' moment in Omaha

Snippets:

Coach V on the impromptu Vol Walk at the Marriot in Omaha: "That was a seal-the-deal type environment and moment for me,” “Driving away both times, it was a little bit of a this is a partnership to me with what was started with our fans and our team. “When you have a good partnership, you don’t break it and you don’t leave it either.”

On the contract extension negotiation: "To put things simply, we were all in as long as Tennessee was all in,” “We put a lot of time and effort into this place. This is where our coaching staff likes to live. We all like working together. It was very important for us to all stay together. We also want to see through all the work we have put in.”
'
On valuing loyalty: “I’m going to be loyal to the Volunteers,” “I won’t be looking anywhere else to do anything else.” “I would have liked to be a head coach by age 30. But it took a little bit longer. Tennessee is the place that pulled the trigger and showed confidence in me. That is something I wanted to reward them with — with effort, and, hopefully, success.”

On the impromptu volwalk, it was a neat experience. People of all walks of life including families, fans, and even people who did not realize what was going on in Omaha that day who wanted to be a part of it and became Vol fans. You could tell he was somewhat overwhelmed with the appreciation for the staff and team during that walk. I'm glad he is staying and the University did the right thing.

Thanks for sharing! I’m glad to hear it was a neat experience. The Volwalk is one of my favorite aspects of being a Tennessee fan and the way you described it is a perfect description. People and fans from all walks of life are there and some organically get drawn into it.

One of my favorite video clips of Omaha is this one from Alex Meyers of WBIR. I think it’s the second VolWalk at the Marriott prior to the Texas game. Coach V took time especially for the youngest Tennessee fans (autographing, fist bumping, etc. ).

Upon seeing this, I thought to myself, “Coach V truly gets it.”

Echoing what you said, glad he’s staying and that the university did the right thing.

Seeing Chancellor Plowman in the Vol Walk was pure gold.
