Vitello Agrees to Contract Extension

I listened to Commissioner Sankey's conversation with John and Jimmy for SEC Media Days, and Coach V and Tennessee baseball's run was brought up near the end of it. The Commissioner had great things to say about Coach V and the atmosphere particularly during Super Regionals. He also congratulated Coach and White for getting the new contract extension done.

[Sankey's comments about Coach V and Tennessee baseball start 10:33-12:09]

After listening to his interview, I notice more parallels between our 2021 baseball team and our 2018-2019 men's hoops team:
  • teams full of personality, talented, and resilient players
  • teams with swagger
  • teams that exceeded expectations
  • One Fly We All Fly / Daddy Hat
  • Players that can mentor younger players and provide leadership on the next team: Fulky - basketball; Evan, Luc, and Redmond - baseball
  • teams with a healthy culture
  • national visibility serves as springboard to more elite recruits
  • elite coaches with proven track record and backgrounds; track record in player development / sending players to pros
  • in recruiting it's much more about program / player "fit" than player ranking
  • family feel

And, he’s still talking about facilities/recruiting.

I heard him say that Evan will be a "player-coach" this year. Looks like he will be starting a coaching career this season. Vitello's future coaching tree is sprouting roots.

*nods* I also picked up on that about Evan. That's great! Perhaps he'll take a similar path like Richard Jackson after next season. It'll be fun watching Coach V's coaching tree sprout its roots.

Don’t tease us like that!!

Sorry Old Timer! It wasn't a tease. :) ETA: I wrote a post comparing Coach Pearl and Coach V, but I didn't like the funky wording, so I deleted it.

As a replacement, I found VQ's recording of Coach V's presser. It may have better sound quality and a few more minutes at the end (than WVLT's version).

Article from Wes Rucker:

Vols' Vitello: Once you win big, you must keep winning big

"Now, as Vitello joked, all he has to do is continue producing at an elite level on an annual basis to prevent the people who love him from hating him.

Vitello didn’t just rebuild the Tennessee programs. He built a passionate monster of a fan base. Now he wants to prevent that monster from consuming him.

“You know, the Tennessee fans have been great to us, but they're human,” Vitello said with a grin. “You do it once, ‘Well, let's see it again.' And that's understandable, and that's kind of where you want to be at with your standards. But in order to adhere to those, there's a lot of stress that's got to be spent to make sure you got pieces of the puzzle.”

He gets it!
