He’s going to. Vanderbilt has zero fan interest or passionTime will tell but I think he may actually steal the mantle for the state’s premier baseball program away from Vanderbilt just like Neyland did with football a century ago. Hell, he probably already has when you look at the last 4 years. If the current trajectory continues, I think you’re right, he’ll be baseball’s Summitt/Neyland.
I think this is a little premature, but Tony is at the beginning of his journey and certainly has the potential to be in that discussion. Pat and Neyland had a lot of years of success!!!!Some people will immediately scoff and Neyland/Pat’s contributions to their particular sport trumps Vitello’s of course, but in terms of actual coaching, he’s up there.
As a casual (I watch SEC games and the tourney games, not gonna pretend I’m a diehard by any stretch) this program was dead. As someone who lived in Knoxville for 20+ years, no one gave a damn about the baseball team. I remember going to a Tennessee basketball game in 2011 and you got a free ticket to watch the baseball game with it right after the basketball game and there wasn’t 300 people. And that was 2011.
This was probably the worst program in the SEC. No support, no fanfare, no hope. And Vitello by year 5 has the best team in the country and about as incredible a 4 year run you can have in college baseball. The player development, the recruiting, the ability to get the most out of his players. The total package.
And it’s not just because they win. I know the nation thinks he’s a jackass but Tony was the exact dude they needed. He built this program from ground zero. No talent, no enthusiasm. This forum used to get 20 posts for an SEC series and we had 15K posts over the three games. A truly incredible feat. What he has done in seven years is borderline miraculous.
Best baseball coach in the country. A true Tennessee legend. Give him a lifetime contract. Thank you Tony Vitello. What a team. What a ride. Go Damn Vols.
I agree we need to do whatever needs to be done to keep him. I do remember the BaseVols also being really good under Rod Delmonico when he first got here (absolutely terrible then won the SEC 93-95) as well. He has one Natty, so Fulmeresque. Not yet on the Nelyand Summit level.Best baseball coach in the country. A true Tennessee legend. Give him a lifetime contract. Thank you Tony Vitello. What a team. What a ride. Go Damn Vols.
I put him comfortably ahead of Fulmer. He built it from nothing, and we're consistently great. He's the best coaching hire the school has made since Summit (basically last 50 years) no doubt about it.yeah I will put him with Fulmer but not neyland or summit.. .. Dont get me wrong I love Coach V but this is a little ahead of it.. INCREDIBLE 5 YEAR RUN AND WHAT HE IS BUILDING THOUGH
Cant get much better than 60 wins... sec regular season champs...sec tourney champs.. national champs
Trending towards baseball version of Hurley @ UConn...ability to reload with highest level portal and hs recruits and be back in contention every year. The guys on the SEC network said it best. Who wouldn't want to play for Tony Vitello. The portal and recruits i think Tony will have his picks of who he wants. This team was 60 - 13 this year.
While you are right about Football being the biggest Championship in all of College Athletics. However I will challenge that baseball is much harder to do. The format is a challenge alone then throw in getting to play Texas A&M, Florida State and NC. All of this comes on short rest. I have been fortunate enough to see Tennessee win titles in Football, WBB, Baseball. It is just hard to do. There is a reason only 2 teams have won it all as the #1 seed.A National Championship in Football is a BIGGER Deal than Baseball. I dislike Phil and love Baseball. Butt, it is what it is!
It is great for Baseball, but it does not compare to Football National Championship.
