That #8 car was BAD about 30 laps into a run tonight. Before the last round of pit stops, he went from 15th and 12 seconds behind Kahne to 5th place and finished only 3.5 seconds behind. Just bad fast the longer they went.

Sweet.

Definitely do-able at a track he's won at 3 times. I guess the 18th is assuming Kahne wins and leads the most laps, which isn't guaranteed, of course.

I think Jr. will win the race this weekend, he's been on too good of a run lately to not win this race...He won it in the Spring, I think he'll defnitely make it, he runs too good at Richmond

Now Jayski's and a few more reliable sites are reporting that Mark Martin will drive the #88 next season for RYR.

Yes, that's assuming Kahne wins and leads the most laps, and Jr doesn't lead a lap, then 18th will guarantee him a spot in the chase. If Jr leads then he's in with a 20th or better.

The current drivers in positions three through 10 in the standings will clinch a Chase berth with the following finishes Saturday, regardless of how other competitors finish:

#29-Kevin Harvick – 40th
#24-Jeff Gordon – 25th
#5-Kyle Busch – 22nd
#8-Dale Earnhardt Jr. – 16th
#11-Denny Hamlin – 16th
#20-Tony Stewart – seventh
#6-Mark Martin – fourth
#31-Jeff Burton – fourth

I actually felt bad for Stewart last night.

You could really tell in his voice how upset he was to miss it. That had to be nerveracking for those 9 guys to know that only 1 was gonna miss it.

It has to be even more nerveracking to know that you're the one guy that missed it.....Well Tid, at least our boy made it in the 8 car....Let's hope he can go out and be consistent and win us a Championship

Word. :rock2:

It's crazy, the track I'm the most worried about for him is Talladega. Who would have thought a couple years ago you'd be saying that. wow.

It's crazy. Stewart is out with 2 wins, 10 top 5s and 14 top 10s. Martin is in with 0 wins, 5 top 5s and 11 top 10s. If Nascar is going to change the format for the chase they need to add a rule where a driver without a win is out. It's maddening that a guy who goes out and just rides around playing it safe, not even trying for a win, can make it by running 10-15 every week. That's not a slap at Martin, Rusty Wallace did the same thing last year. :BANGHEAD2:

I am still in disbelief,"Smoke" not in the chase?!?! Get Em Junior Get Em.:rock2:

AHH!!The 6's are after me again!! See permalink #.I scored that one week this yr.

I disagree about making the whole thing bout wins... it's been about scoring the most points. It's not like winning is penalized... you get 10 more points than anyone else if you win a race, so there is a bonus for it.

I'm not really worried about Talladega, I think this spring was a fluke because its rare DEI loses an engine, especially at a plate track....He'll be fine, the races I'm worried about is places like Homestead, but then again this year he has really improved on those downforce tracks

I disagree. I think winning is the only reason for competing in the first place. I'm not saying that the championship should always go to the guy with the most wins or anything, but Nascar should put more emphasis on winning and running up front, and less on riding around playing it safe. You've got guys who are out there trying to win every race, which to me is what you are supposed to do, then you have guys who just go out there and ride around in circles trying to stay out of trouble.

As badly as I hate Jeff Gordon, I admire the fact that when he was winning his championships he never did it by "points racing". He tried to win every week. And so did Dale for that matter.

exactly. 10 more points for winning is nothing.

I just think it's more impressive if you go out there and run well every week.

If they start giving substantially more points for wins, it allows someone to specialize at a certain kind of track, dominate them, win most of them, and allow them to fail miserably at other types of tracks. You should be able to compete, run, and finish well at all tracks, not just dominate and win some of them. If you can run well and win at all of them, then do it.

Do you really think Newman deserved the championship in 2003 just because he won 8 races but failed to finish just as many?

Yep. I think it should be about a 40-50 point difference between 1st and 2nd, and a ten point difference between each position inside of the top ten. Then there should be about a 20 point difference between 10th and 11th.

If we were talking about guys running 2nd, 3rd every week I would agree with that, but we're talking about guys making the chase by running 10th-15th every week. Do you really consider that impressive?
