Dacula! Hah, I remember when that was just a residual dam from an old mill.
If I was in your shoes I would definitely live in Athens but don't dis the small towns. some of my best adventures have been in places like Cornelia, Jefferson, Gainesville and Helen. And Athens has a Varsity, so you have all the comforts of home.
I went down there twice for interviews. I did not go to Duluth or Lawrenceville. I did have time to kill and drove around Dacula, Auburn, and Winder. None of them got me very excited...
I spent two glorious years at Oxford. Of course back in the 70s, the whole Covington area had not been taken over by the Atlanta metroplex.
Atlanta traffic has always been harsh. It will never improve.
Covington is still far enough out that you can get around without much of a problem. One town over in Conyers, it's a nightmare.
The perimeter?
I-285 basically circles inner Atlanta. It's known as "the perimeter". I'd avoid living in it or near it really. If you've ever been in rush hour Atalanta traffic, you'd better understand. It's miserable.
You can move 15 minutes outside and never know you lived so close to a huge sprawling city.
I personally don't like to be yelled at by the person I'm giving my $ to. Chili dogs are crazy good though. What's a guy to do?
Thanks, just adding another hour to the trip home and possibly longer with Atlanta Friday afternoon traffic. :shakehead:
This is easy. You don't want any part of north or east metro Atlanta commute if you don't have to. You definitely want to live in Athens. It's a great town.
So, to summarize, west of Winder is traffic and stress. East of Winder is less traffic and a college town filled with cool bars, restaurants and women. The choice is yours
It's hard to convince people of this, but surprisingly, from Athens it's actually about the same heading north on 441 and then going to Waynesville NC and picking up I-40 to Knoxville as it is going to ATL and catching I-75.
