There is a chance USU will beat us which would literally be catastrophic for the program.
It's more likely we win a close game and we the fans will wring our hands and be anxious about the SEC schedule. The media (which hates us) will portray it as a Dooley-esque, same ol' Vols, you can't win anything with freshmen.
By far the most likely scenario is that we are going to curb-stomp USU with a hobnail boot in our house by sending wave after wave of faster, stronger, more athletic, and better coached student athletes at them for 60 minutes.
We will be ecstatic until we read the Monday morning media which will tell stories of: Vols still don't know where they are after win, Vols are supposed to beat USU, NCST-like win and Vols will still finish 5 - 7 again, etc.
There will be no good news stories post the USU victory. Our mistakes will be magnified and the good will be shrouded in mystery and diminished. Take it to the bank.

There is always a chance you lose a football game... but there's not a big chance UT loses this one. It would not be catastrophic for the "program" but wouldn't be particularly good for the current coaching staff... which I don't equate to "the program". The program is much larger than a coach. There is a chance USU will beat us which would literally be catastrophic for the program.
UT has a significant talent advantage and are now two years into Jones' system. USU replaces more starters and more critical starters than UT does. UT should have an incredible advantage vs their back 7 in the passing game. "Dooley-esque" might be the right call if this team is not ready to take care of business vs USU.It's more likely we win a close game and we the fans will wring our hands and be anxious about the SEC schedule. Confused. I thought you said it was more likely UT wins a close one?By far the most likely scenario is that we are going to curb-stomp USU with a hobnail boot in our house by sending wave after wave of faster, stronger, more athletic, and better coached student athletes at them for 60 minutes.
If UT takes care of business vs USU then the media won't have that impact on me. I can't speak for anyone else. You are correct though. Media types do not like to admit they were wrong... until it becomes undeniable then they'll act as if they weren't wrong to start with. This is one reason you can see an unranked team at 5-1 smash a top 10 team that was 5-0... and the winning team not pass the losing team in the polls. Even though the media at this time of year especially is very shallow in their research and over/under rate teams based on past years... they don't change very easily. We will be ecstatic until we read the Monday morning media which will tell stories of: Vols still don't know where they are after win, Vols are supposed to beat USU, NCST-like win and Vols will still finish 5 - 7 again, etc.
I think there has been sufficient hype to this game in favor of USU that if UT wins comfortably you will see some of the more pro-UT guys stepping out to crow. There are a few of them. There will be no good news stories post the USU victory. Our mistakes will be magnified and the good will be shrouded in mystery and diminished. Take it to the bank.
Other than the Knoxville media, I'm betting we don't get a mention nationally unless someone has a top ten play on ESPN.
