Vols #6 in Coaches Poll

I’ve always disliked the phrase “the eyeball test.” What people really mean when they say this is, “My skewed opinion based on what I want to see.” It’s funny how everyone’s eyeball test is different. It’s clearly not an objective measure.

My eyeballs saw multiple dropped TD passes that were extremely accurate throws. With those catches, he has nearly 400 yards and 3-4 TD throws. Despite those drops, he still had 292 yards on 74% completion. His accuracy was definitely improved against Kentucky. He also made two very key 3rd down plays on our final 90 yard drive to put the game away.
There's lies. There's damn lies. And then there's statistics.
The eyeball test is what it is. The statistics will never tell you the whole story. Just like the score at the end of the game will not tell you how the game actually went.
Nico clearly panics and looks like a deer stuck in the headlights whenever there is a blitz situation. Even when he scrambles, half the time he scrambles into the defense and get sacked. Sure. Every once in a while he bust loose with an awesome run. Some people would say "isn't that enough?" To that I would say "no". If the quarterback from MTSU scrambles and makes a good play every once in awhile but looks like a deer in the headlights more times than not when he's under pressure, I would say that that's a good play. But we've got what is supposed to have been the cream of the crop in his recruiting class regarding quarterbacks. This is supposed to be the highest rated quarterback we've ever pulled. He's a red shirt freshman, not a true freshman. And he's getting paid handsomely for his talents. So criticism is in order. I don't care if he's a 18 or 19-year-old kid. I'm not asking him to be at the controls of the space shuttle. That would be very unfair. He's playing a football game. So the criticism is fair game.

He's a red-shirt freshman, that's true, but he only got limited playing time behind Milton III. His first real game was the bowl game against Iowa. He is still learning the complexities of the offense during real game action. So different than the practice field. The game against Kentucky, you start to see the progress he has made as the season goes on. Milton wasn't very good about feeling the pocket collapsing and he was more knowledgeable due to his time in the program. I think Nico is gonna be great, just give it time.

Criticism of paid employees is fair if you're the one paying them. It is also great for any paid professionals to ignore all worthless (non-paying) critics.
