Vols are really in a deep dark hole

Barnes said in post game that he told his team that Vandy would kick it out on the back side for a three ball. He called it, told his players not to allow a three and worst case the game goes to O/t. Instead we collapsed on the interior and left the shooter wide open. ON, ZZ, Phillips and Santi were on the floor. I don’t recall the 5th player but someone left his man.

Wow. Hate to hear that. At least Barnes saw it coming. Guy who made that shot just ran to that corner and waited for the kick-out. Our guy was 2-3 steps late, it seemed.

Not being an offensive scoring team makes too much pressure on any defensive basketball team. You got to be able to win both ways. We can’t do that. Defensive dominant teams don’t win end of the year tournament games usually. Hopefully we start peaking or heading that direction so we can let the defense breath a little.

To heck with defense ... give me a team that can score. Defense rarely wins in basketball or football any more. Score, score, score!!!
I’ve been saying this , Barnes credits himself on the defensive side of the ball, but the problem is when it comes tourney time the defense doesn’t hold an opponent to 40 points and our offense can’t bail out the average defensive night.. look what huepel is doing with a fast pace offensive scheme. I know it’s different sports but I want a basketball coach who’s identity is offense. That way we can get some high level recruits in here. It’s hard to get the best of the best year n and year out with a coach who expects defensive perfection.

During the course of the game, I look to the coach to call time out and make adjustments, and fire up his team. We call time out, but not much changes in the game.

During a timeout, set up a play that got someone open for a dunk who wouldn’t take it, another play that got the ball to the exact person you’d want it too and they miss the free throw, then tells them exactly where the other team is going to try to get the ball and they leave that spot wide open. Coaches can’t cross the line and do it for them, they were put in the right positions and didn’t execute. If you need a coach to fire you up to play an in state rival who is also a conference game, while you’re sitting on the cusp of being a 1 seed then it’s a you issue.

Valid points, so where is the breakdown?
It's not just one guy on the floor

Lost a lot last night;
-Lost opportunity to win SEC regular season
-now are in danger of losing a double bye in SEC tournament
-lost opportunity to be 1 or 2 seed in NCAA tourney
-lost two of last 3 to (2) teams that wont make tourney

With the way the team is playing, I can see them losing at least 4 out of their next 7 games. No way they win at Rupp, Bama is going to destroy them (they beat that Florida team with a great defense by 30 last night), A&M is better than Vandy/ Florida and game is at their place, Auburn will smoke TN at Auburn and Arkansas is playing the best ball of the year.

This team appears to have lost their confidence, ZZ has become turnover/foul prone and has a lot of trouble with guards as quick as him. Santi doesn't look comfortable, may still be injured. JJJ will be out with a sprained ankle for at least two weeks. Uros gives us nothing, Julian Phillips is not a lottery or first round pick at this time, his handles are suspect, he lacks confidence and gets lost on defense.

Going to be a long end of the season, but I will watch and cheer them on, even though I feel this team is done.

They play so solid on defense, it's almost like they catch their breath on offense. There are real probs but nothing a win can't fix. The rest of college basketball isn't terribly scary

Feels a bit like the football team after the USC debacle. So much on the line and we lay the proverbial egg and we lose a key leader to an injury. Maybe they'll finish strong like the football team did.

I think I feel worse about this team, the last two weeks have been really bad for Tennessee basketball.

Shooting is terrible, defense looks lackluster, this is not the same team we started the year with. We can only hope that Barnes pulls them out of this ditch!
Seems whatever has affected that really good looking UCONN team that was so highly thought of has affected not only us but North Carolina, Kansas, Duke, Kentucky and Gonzaga.

Basketball is weird

We won the SEC tourney and was playing as good as anyone going into the big tournament last year and got bounced in the 2nd round. Clearly this team can play with anyone this year, however JJJ needs to get healthy.

I disagree. They didn't shoot the ball horribly in this game and Vanderbilt played by far their best game of the season.

I feel like the main issue with this team right now is Ziegler being out of control[/QUOTE]
'Wonder if he has been reading too much press. Or wonder if other teams have decided to put more pressure on him than has been the case early in the season.

Barnes was so frustrated. I’m not sure if it was on TV but Barnes ripped a new one into Phillips. Instinct takes over so I assume Santi lost his train of thought, but the players must follow Barnes’ instructions. Barnes told them repeatedly during the timeout to guard the three ball!!!

The worst case scenario would be Vand sending the game into overtime. But, it didn’t happen. It was a fun game to attend and the last few min were electric. But the outcome still stings. Bad loss and I’m afraid this team is dejected and worn out physically and mentally.

They looked confused to me!
Yep...and no Alpha to go to in nutt cutten time hurts this team.

And why dang near every season does the we look tired excuses start flying? Are we the only team that gets tired late in a long season?....I'd say all teams are to a extent....I'm 67 and get tired....I didn't as a 18-22 years old.

I wasn't talking about the last play of the game---more about the entire game. This game shouldn't have to come down to one play with 8 seconds left. Vandy is not even a ranked team, shouldn't be this close at the end
