Vols destined to only be a top 20 team...

Hehe. Didn't say that at all. Losing to Arkansas didn't "ruin" our season and we were in the playoffs. It made our playoff picture harder but being in the playoffs is the goal. Getting a good spot in the playoffs is better.

I'm not at all a "Fahr Heupel" guy or even any of the staff. I'd rather hire a GM to help with finding and retaining players and planning an overall recruiting focus.
He has a staff. I have a very strong opinion that if he wanted to keep some of the players on the team that have hit the portal, they would still have them. Any team will have a very difficult time paying ridiculous and undeserved NIL pay for players and retain the entire group. Greed has taken over everything and either a salary cap arrangement is made, or there will be no competitive teams left in college football. I have said it before and I will say it again, College sports is dead or at best on life support. Sports in general are full of whiners that make more money than ANYONE should ever make for playing a game. That means coaches, ADs, GMs AND players.

And there are those on this site that have the audacity to say other fanbases are entitled and arrogant. We finally have a coach and staff that has made us relevant again, and the idiotic branch of our "fanbase" act like complete morons.
Yep. We certainly stank up the joint Saturday night but too many people overreact to one game. Josh has brought this program out of the Dark Ages and a long way in a short period of time. If you listen to some of these morons, you would think we finished 2 and 10 and are the NCAA version of the Bad News Bears. I would say I’ve never seen anything like it but that would be a lie. It happens after every loss and this one exaggerates it.

The thing is, we were part of the TWELVE teams that made the PLAYOFFS. There are more than 90% of the fans that would have killed to be there.

Nobody is "making too much money" because someone is paying them. No players, coaches, or admins have a weapon on people forcing them to pay or else.

Maybe you're jealous that others have skills you don't or don't use to get paid like that?

I've got friends who've given up watching football and taken up playing pickleball on weekends. If they fix my hip, I might join them but I'll still likely wear orange doing it.

Yep. There were 122 other teams that would have given their eye teeth to make it. But that’s just not good enough for some of our self entitled fans. They are starting to sound like Bammers who think they should never lose a game.

I think it's natural after losing at anything to say: I should've done this or that or tried this or thought this out from the start or whatever.

It's crazy to think we're not a good program but there's nothing like a good curb stomping to make people step back and go...... Whoa! Are we THAT good?

The answer is: good enough to make the playoffs but not a top 5 elite program.

There's some crazies who want to blow it up, burn it down, or something but we just did that after Pruitt and it worked. We're he-.... not quite here..... but he-. Some folks get really upset with close, but not quite......

I don't know why. It was a dang good season with one really bad loss at Arkansas.

Bama about to have things turn against them as well.
We’ve beat Bama and Florida 2 out of last 3 years. In 4 years we have came from bottom into being a top 10-15 program and a contender for the SEC. It’s too early to say we can or can’t compete on a nearly yearly basis or every 2-3 year basis. We are still building and recruiting well. Heupel hates losing, I expect us to stay a contender mostly year in and out. GBO

Stop changing the subject. Nobody is debating that we are better than OSU. You specifically said that Indiana and SMU are better than UT and that is patently false. Neither team beat anybody this year.
On a neutral field my money would be on Indy & Smu. Both fared better than UT in the CFP, all 3 were 7-9 point road dogs vs similar opposition. That said, none of the 3 belonged there. Just as I suspect Boise and AZ ST won't belong.

We were #7 in the last CFP poll. And #6 in both the AP and Coaches Poll. We're a top 10 program right now. What we ain't is a top 3 national title contender like Ohio State and Georgia. Those two teams outclassed us because they have more talent. We need to start recruiting at a top 5 level annually if we wanna compete with them. If we don't then we'll continue to be what we were this year. Good enough to make the playoffs but not good enough to actually compete with those that can win it all.
Pretty sure you said "we" (LOL) were winning the NC...

or in a good year maybe top 10? Don't understand it but just not in the cards to be a consistent powerhouse year after year like georgia, alabama etcetera...
I can live with that. My first game was.in '65. Since then I've seen a lot worse. I have no famtasies about being an OSU or Bama. We are what we are.

Listen, you tell me who deserves more money....a person that runs around and catches a football for a living, or someone who runs into a fire to rescue a person they have never met. Who works harder....a person who gets paid an obscene amount of money to work a 40-50 hour week, usually in pristine conditions, or the worker that works in a plant that is freezing in the winter and boiling in the summer to weld together the structural frame components for the vehicle you drive, or the lineman that works around the clock when the power lines are down in the freezing cold? Is it more important to decide whether to go for it on fourth and in inch, or to decide which procedure might save the life of someone who has a car wreck and brought into the emergency room you work in after you have already worked a 36 hour shift? The complete lack of perspective by people with no concept of what is actually important is what is wrong with this world right now. Until someone takes a stand, it will never get better. I am not jealous, because my life is fulfilled helping to ensure the welds those people work their tails off to provide keep sorry people from being killed when they forget how to drive. I will always wear orange, and will always call things the way I see them. A curse of being someone who is in their 60s and has little patience for idiocy.

Is it very nice to have a thread conversation with someone that has a lot of functioning brain cells and quite a bit if common sense to go along with it.

Society values and pays what it values. If we valued EMTs more, they'd make millions. We don't and there's a reason why.

Elite athletic skills, like it or not, are rarer and more valuable to society as entertainment than lifesaving EMT skills just as the surgeon who does the bypass after the EMT saves them has more elite skills and makes more money than the EMT.

It is market value and a cornerstone of the American capitalist society. Hate on that, not the athletes or those who pay them.

You must be way to young to remember the 90's. Us and UF were the SEC royalty with Georgia winning 6-8 games per year and Bama was about the same. The SEC is circular, who goes up, will eventually go back down.....
Yes, if you remember the 90's with Majors and Fulmer in the late 90's the fans were saying the same things about those coaches as they are saying today about JH ( why can't we win the big games ?) Fulmer used to get top 5 talent and eventually won a NC but I recall hearing the same comments after we'd lose some big game that are the same comments we hear today ( we just get out manned in the trenches, , our guys are not fast enough etc ) Personally, I think the coach is the key factor selling the program to potential recruits and naturally good players want to play where they have a winning tradition .

I agree that sports figures make more money than I think they should, but it is a marketplace that sets the rates. I don't want anyone telling me that I make too much money for doing X if people are stupid enough to pay me that money.

JH and every program now have to manage like a pro team with regard to which players to pay and keep. Even without a salary cap or NIL limits, they still have to work with the $ that they have. So, you pay to keep your stars, and build up the rest of the team with the best quality you can get around them. I don't see any NFL team winning like the Patriots did or a CFB team winning like Alabama did as we go into the future. There may be some that are consistently at the top (Ohio State and Georgia look like those teams this week) but I won't be surprised to see them fall off over the next couple of years.

It's easy to forget how bad things were just a few years ago. JH may not be the guy who wins a NC, but he's done more than enough to earn my patience at this point.
