Letā€™s get this out of the way: Tennessee has some dudes on its offensive and defensive lines. Those two units have a lot of bodies and a lot of bodies who look like they belong in the SEC. This is a result of evaluations and recruiting on the personnel side of things and the development from the strength and nutrition staffs.

I'm a guilty as they come about star gazing. I can't help but look for indicators that an incoming touted recruit like Boo Carter or Jordan Ross is the next all-time great.

I'm pragmatic enough to know the entirety of what I quoted is the true foundation of how winning programs are built.

First practice for me now as a fan is too full of feelings to be objective. Still, it's interesting that my first thought after watching and reading was, "I hope the offense scores quickly so we can get to see more of this defense."

Been a few decades since I've had a thought along those lines.

Heard will be going through his first Tennessee training camp with the offensive linemen, though. Despite being a defensive lineman in high school, Tennessee has a belief that Heardā€™s best use comes from putting him on the offensive line. And thatā€™s something that Heard was okay with.

ā€œBecause I was willing to help the team,ā€ Heard said about why he was willing to switch positions after arriving on campus. ā€œAnything to help the team win, Iā€™ll take that role.ā€
But while Heard ā€“ again, 6-foot-8, 320 pounds ā€“ enjoyed his time playing tight end and on the defensive line in high school, he also had a knack for another position on the field.

Punter.

ā€œI was really pretty good because I could kick at least 80 [yards],ā€ Heard said on Wednesday. The longest punt Iā€™ve punted is 88 yards,ā€ Heard said.
