Vols Fall Practice #7

I'm not sure how you could attribute Flowers to his personal bad open field tackling.
McCullough has always been a practice warrior.

Luckily now we have guys that can go in for him and at the very least duplicate his play
We did shut out Vandy and shut down Clemson right after Flowers went out and Walker in full time.

I still agree, McCullough is just not athletic enough

Who knows, Nigel Warrior was awful until his final year. Theo Jackson was meh.

If he struggles again then we better see someone else in there finally.

You aren't a fool. Numerous people were bad-mouthing the OL during camp season. In fact, they had some pretty poor showings at the beginning of the year. Lots of folks were bad-mouthing the WR room last year too. I don't remember anyone picking Hyatt or Wright to have a breakout season like they did.

It also looks like the D should be much improved. Front 7 could be legit. I will probably get flamed for this, but Hadden looks bigger, stronger, and is taking reps with the 1s in practice alongside Slaughter. It also sounds like Turrentine is stepping up too. TMac and Walker were really good at time last season. If this secondary can turn the corner, look out.
Turnage has gotten starts as well. It looks like it's been Slaughter, Hadden, Turnage as our best corners early.

Still wouldn't be surprised if Jeudy Lally proves himself during a scrimmage or an actual game.

It's nice having some of the experience at corner and Safety, but I'm hoping some of these younger guys start stepping up. The experience is nice for depth but we need some difference makers at these positions.
Agree. I think (hope) Rickey Gibson and Jordan Matthews are difference makers, but how soon. Other than maybe Deniko Slaughter, not sure any of the upper classman are true difference makers in the secondary.

Maybe Andre Turrentine has the talent if he can put it all together.

I know it’s a hot take and way too early to make a proclamation, but is Ethan Davis going to be perpetually injured?
i actually think Burrell could find a spot at S or star.

As long as the wrs and linebacker core are healthy and milton keeps this accuracy going as I stated earlier this team just might be that damn special.

Such good news hearing about Miltons accuracy being on point. Hope he brings it to the game setting.
Seems like the focus for him has been on touch. Lots of media folks praising his accuracy and touch on deep throws. This O relies on taking the top off the D. Really excited to see how much he has improved in that area.

I guess we will be seeing Lane at C before Nichols if Mays has the injury bug again. I don’t hate it since Karic has a bit more potential at LG than Lane.

Parker Ball is a more than capable center, too. Hopefully Mays can get back to full speed quickly.

After practice on Wednesday, Thornton was asked the fastest number he’s ever recorded. He said it was north of 24 mph during his time at Oregon.

“Last season they said the fastest I ran was 24.3 miles per hour,” Thornton said during his press conference, “when I was chasing down a block.”

'Freaky talent': Dont'e Thornton says he's been clocked at over 24mph

Still all of these issues with the secondary. While it's not about their play, it's always something, and it seems we can never get to the point where that area is one of the strong units.

Haven’t heard much at all about Tyler Baron. I hope he has a big year
Tennessee defensive line coach Rodney Garner said Tuesday that Baron, a former Top247 prospect, has “had the best offseason that he’s had since we’ve been here.” Garner added that he has “seen maturity come from” Baron, along with a more team-oriented approach and mindset.

“I think he’s matured a lot, and I think he’s grown as a young man, and I think he’s bought in more to the team concept,” Garner said of Baron. “And I think he’s being more of a team guy, more of a Tennessee guy than a Tyler guy.

“And then I think he’s starting to see that, if Tennessee does well, then Tyler Baron’s going to do well. But if Tennessee does poorly, then odds are Tyler Baron’s not going to do as well.”
