Vols Guaranteed a Spot?

When Georgia lost the second time, there were a bunch of one loss and two loss teams. Indiana and BYU were still undefeated. Texas isn’t going to drop as far because there aren’t as many SEC teams with the same or better record than what Texas would have with another loss. It made sense for 2 loss Georgia to fall behind 1 loss Tennessee who they hadn’t yet beaten, 2 loss Bama who beat them, and 2 loss Ole Miss who beat them. It would be debatable for 2 loss Texas to fall behind 2 loss Tennessee and outrageous for them to fall behind 3 loss Alabama and 3 loss Ole Miss. Indiana and BYU no longer get the benefit of the doubt that they got earlier now that Indiana lost one and BYU has lost 2.

I’m not sure what the obsession is with some of you with saying Texas isn’t getting in if they lose, but they’re already in barring the playoff being canceled or their campus getting blown up or something that extreme.

I'm with ya man. Texas is not dropping out of the playoffs. Agree or not their brand is too big to leave out with only two ranked losses.

Doesn't matter and those are based on what they know for now - so it would not make sense for anyone to bet on certain teams - but to take that as a done deal is crazy!

If A&M beats Texas like OU beat Bama, they will drop significantly. How significantly will depend upon how the other teams in the 4 to 12 slot performed - if all those teams win the dop will be significant.

Georgia dropped from 3 to 12 (and out of the playoff group) when they lost to Ole Miss. Georgia beat Texas. What makes you think Texas should be treated differently than Georgia if they incur that second loss in a similar fashion?
Texas is in, win or lose, unless the loss is something unimaginable like 41-6 and Ewers and Manning both get injured. Not 100%, but over 99.

Brands do not matter to the committee...nor do tv ratings, matchups, or anything else besides their ranking

Texas absolutely could be left out. But only if they lose in a big, ugly way to A&M.

A&M is currently #20 in the AP poll. Texas is #3. Logic might say you move Texas down enough, and A&M up enough, so that A&M is ahead of Tex if the latter lose.

But logic is fuzzy in football, particularly in poll rankings. If the game is very close, even if Texas loses, you could see Texas still ranked higher than A&M come Sunday. Like, Texas at #8 or #9, and A&M at #10 or #11. In that scenario, Texas remains in the playoffs. And A&M is poised to pop up toward the top 4 or 5 spots if they beat UGa in Atlanta.

On the other hand, if A&M absolutely embarrasses Texas this Saturday, like a 10-point or better score difference, the pollsters will absolutely flip-flop the two teams. A&M will get up to #8 or #9, while Texas drops below them. And quite possibly out of the playoffs entirely.

It could happen.

I don't think it will, but it could.

Go Vols!

p.s. And for those who say, "but these are AP rankings, we should be talking about the CFP"...have you noticed how the CFP committee is riding in the AP's shadow this year? They haven't always done that, but they're doing it in 2024.
A&M is only getting in if they win the SEC. They don’t have to move A&M over Texas because Texas would still have fewer losses and doesn’t have a bad loss to Auburn on their resume. So no, it won’t happen.

I take it you're a Texas fan. Fair enough, though it woulda been nice of you to note it in your screen name.

In either case, this is true: there are circumstances where Texas could be left out this year. Not likely combinations, but possible ones. I laid out one above. You don't have to believe it for it to be true.

Go Vols!

I am not a Texas fan. I’m a Vol fan, which I noted in my screen name by referencing a Johnny Majors quote. A Vol fan should know that.

There are no circumstances where Texas misses out at this point. It just isn’t happening.

I’m not sure what the obsession is with some of you with saying Texas isn’t getting in if they lose, but they’re already in barring the playoff being canceled or their campus getting blown up or something that extreme.

It is the parallel to the thought that says Tennessee is not guaranteed to be in even if they beat Vandy, but Texas is in even if they lose to A&M even though the records would be the same and neither would play for the conference championship. If Georgia wins, then it is just a seeding question because ALL three SHOULD be in, unless the committee just goes crazy with all this.

But if A&M wins the conference game, it leads to a situation where you have 4 teams. A&M is in. Now you have three who all have arguments of why they should be in. If there are 4 places available for SEC teams - no problem - but more than likely one of those teams is not going to make it.

Who gets left out if one team is and how is that determined? Does the committee just look at the number of losses and say, "sorry Georgia you lost to Ole Miss"? Does the committee say Georgia, you are in as you beat Tennessee and Texas? And if that is true, then it is a comparison between Tennessee and Texas. You think because Texas is now ranked above Tennessee, they are safe - but with an impressive Tennessee win over Vandy and a Texas loss to A&M, the thoughts around the teams may be reversed.

Bottom line if you believe Texas is in regardless of what happens in the A&M game, then you have to believe that Tennessee is in if they beat Vandy. But with specific outcomes in the SEC and other conference championship games, the SEC may be looking at only 3 teams in.

When the games all end after championship week, there are going to be a host of 2 loss teams across all the conferences vying for spots in the 12.

I do believe Tennessee is in if we beat Vandy. They’re taking 4 SEC teams if A&M wins it. They won’t win it, but they would take 4 SEC teams if that situation arises.

Is this just a scenario where you are so scared Tennessee is gonna get screwed that you are lying to yourself and saying Tennessee could be prioritized over Texas?

Legions of the miserable…memories of ole John…don’t know if you’re old enuf to remember The Johnny Majors Show with John Ward on Sunday mornings after Saturday games.
They used to tape it a few hours after games late on Saturday nights and sometimes ole John had had a nip
or two and it was obvious and Ward would try to work around John being tipsy. They had to edit it and do several takes at times.

My favorite all time Johnnyism was after a particularly tough game against Alabama and He said…
I know Tennessee fans are sad and upset today but you know there’s a hundred billion Chinese that couldn’t give a flip. Ward just smiled and didn’t acknowledge it. Good times! I miss John Majors.

I think Tennessee is in over Texas if they beat Vandy convincingly and Texas loses to A&M. Late losses matter - especially if it is the last game.
