I agree. I think most of the DBs that left us in the portal saw the writing on the wall and left because they knew they would only play if the younger guys got hurt. What we lost in experience, we gain in youth and talent. Honestly, Gibson probably should’ve been playing way more this past season, especially after Hadden’s injury.

I think he could be. Our best CBs were Hadden (gone), Slaughter (gone), Jeudy Lally, and Gibson (talented but less experienced than McCoy). I would think JL, Gibson, Matthews, and McCoy compete to start and all four play.

This guy is a day 1 starter at Corner. Had over 30 tackles this season and was considered for freshman AA from what I've heard and seen.The safety Thomas from MTSU is a day 1 starter at Strong Safety too IMO. Both guys had about 40 offers from D1 schools in the portal. Big gets for this staff late in the cycle when some folks thought we were struggling. The truth in the matter is CJH chose to focus on locking down 4/5 starters on the Oline from within, as well as Omari Thomas and others before starting to announce any outsiders. This despite some obvious needs at TE, DB, DT etc.

Coach Hype has really finished strong this last week. Guys we got were top of our boards at CB, Safety, TE etc.

Don't overlook the fact that Jonathan Smith brought the Oregon State football program back from the deep depths of irrelevance, and in his two seasons as DC Trent Bray had the #16 defense in 2022 and #34 defense in 2023. This is at a program often overlooked as a perpetual "little brother" and, if you pay any attention to the PAC12, you know the offenses are nothing to joke around with.

Point I'm making here is if they're confident enough to have McCoy starting for them, I'm confident that he's a real good player.

With McCoy and Thomas jumping into our defensive backfield as likely starters with experience, that only leaves 3 starting spots for 3 guys the staff feels good about from last season:

Gibson
Matthews
Conyers

Plus bigshot newcomers:

Boo Carter
Marcus Goree

And other young guys that just didnt make top of the pecking order from last year's class. Suddenly we have some actual depth in our defensive backfield...and everyone i mentioned above is a better athlete than the guys left here when CJH took over.

Now if Gabe Jeudy Lally decides to come back, we have 2 experienced starters at CB...with really solid sophomores to back them up and split reps to keep everyone fresher. If GJL comes back our secondary will be very deep AND experienced.

Some of it might be. I think a lot of the criticsm Martinez gets shouild be directed at Banks, i.e. the 10-yard cushions, etc.
