Vols picked 7th in SEC

I’m 30 years old we’ve beat Florida a total of 6 times since I’ve been alive and lost games to them when we were 2 times the team they were. 4 of these 6 wins came when I was a child. Until we can beat them consistently and not lose to them despite us being a better team, I’ll chalk it up as an auto loss every year.
We're at home...Napier will be on the hot seat and Nico is far better than Milton. I think we will be fine in that game

Their schedule is pretty soft comparatively speaking . Half their schedule is Vandy, Ms State, Arkansas and South Carolina, w/ a road trip UMass. I guess they wanted to see the foliage? If they can split @ Bama, @ Texas A&M , OU and Auburn can potentially get in.
I don't think Mizzou beats bama, OU, or tamu. Maybe they beat Auburn, but I can see 3 losses for them and maybe 4.

2nd - 8th place is up for grabs. We have plenty of guys who could end up All SEC besides Pearce and Mays.

Bru McCoy, Spraggins, Sampson, Heard, Nico, Squirrel, Omari Thomas, Omar Norman-Lott, Pilli, Arion Carter, Jermod McCoy, Jackson Ross. All of these guys are talented enough to end up first or second team at years end. Boo Carter, Peyton Lewis, and Mike Matthews should see significant snaps. I think Telander and Staes are wildcards too. Could have a big year.

I like Heupel but I do not like Banks or Martinez. I feel like they’ve both had enough time to prove themselves and have not
Banks is average- not bad, not elite.

Neither one has been able to work with a full set yet.

Let’s check back after this season.

I think if the game was at Auburn I would take Auburn, but I think Mizzou has a better QB and more dynamic playmaker w/ Burton. Those other 3 they could definitely lose. TBH, I think there’s a lot of unknowns with Bama, aTm and OU.

Alright, so why aren't WE one of the teams this season that's making the SEC tough on everyone else instead being seen as one of the teams falling victim to it?
Yeah, look how easy UGA has it. Their favored against every team they play for the entire season!

😀 See how that works

No, 7th in the conference likely would not. Including Texas and Oklahoma, here’s a list of the number of SEC teams that finished in the top 11 (as one of the 12 playoff teams is the highest ranked Group of 5 team) each year.

2023 - 5 teams
2022 - 3 teams
2021 - 3 teams (Group of 5 team inside top 11)
2019 - 4 teams
2018 - 5 teams (Group of 5 team inside top 11)
2017 - 4 teams
2016 - 2 teams
2015 - 2 teams
2014 - 3 teams
Okay but Oklahoma was in the top 12 most of those years so add one more, and Texas will be in the top 12 this year too.

The important thing is that we’re likely to finish better than 7th.

I don't think it's a judgement on Heupel's system or program... it's a good team starting a rookie QB in the SEC, irregardless of his talent.

It's also only one experienced running back, in a system where a season's experience has so far resulted in a surplus of extra yardage and scores.

And why is this? Why do we only have one experienced RB going into year 4 of the program?? Why didn't CJH and staff get more aggressive in the portal and sign an experienced RB for depth? That's a fail on his part IMO.

And it's also that we don't have SEC game-proven breakaway speed at receiver.

Again, why is this the case? You mean to tell me after the 2022 season and the hot shot young, blue chip QB we have starting, no quality WR in the country wanted to come here and play immediately in this system?? That doesn't add up at all. Why does this staff not act with the same sense of urgency in the portal to fill needs that other coaches do? In year 4, in the age of the transfer portal, a program like ours that can offer so much should not be entering the season with question marks like this. Those question marks on this team are there because this staff failed to address them in the off-season. It is what it is.

As noted, I had included/counted both Texas and Oklahoma in those numbers I gave for each season.

Several of those years’ numbers would have been lower if I had chosen not to include the two schools in my original counts.

We lost Small and Wright last year who combine more than 200 carries in the season.. Sampson brings enough experience to carry the team at RB and they have several talented recruits to plug in when he’s out. Just bc they didn’t land a guy at that spot in the portal doesn’t mean they have no depth at the position. Ole miss hits the portal every year and still can’t get over the hump. And at wideout, they brought in Chris Brazzel who should be a huge addition

Sorry, I missed that.

Still, my point is that we’re likely better than 7th. Only 3 games in the schedule that we have any business losing. And Oklahoma in my eyes should be a win and could be a blow out win. Heup will try to score 80.

I don’t get the Banks hate. We were 3rd in the SEC in scoring defense last year and 4th in total defense, with arguably the least talented secondary in the conference.

I get it but we’ve never had a bigger talent advantage over Florida in this period than we will this year.

I’m more anti Martinez than I am Banks. But I’m still not sold on Banks

I think Bama takes a step back this year. Read an article the other day where Milroe made a good play in practice and the coaches encouraged him to pause and celebrate/acknowledge what he did well before moving on to the next play. He commented how different that was from the Saban regime and the team has to adjust to that. That entire roster will have to adopt a new mindset with the coaching staff, which takes time. I believe they’ll be an 8-4 or 9-3 team this season, and I just bet the under at 9.5 on DraftKings for their regular-season win total.

Sounds about right. I see us losing 4 games.

I think Tennessee will at least be 9-3. To assume they lose 4 games is to assume they would be worse than last year. I don't see that. They also have some of the more challenging matchups at home (notably Alabama and Florida).

I don't see Tennessee making Atlanta. They still seem to be too far away from Georgia talent to compete in Athens and It will be hard for them to beat both Alabama and Oklahoma (11-1 might get them in but that will be tall order).

I think they beat Florida this year. Alabama and Oklahoma are toss-ups. Georgia will be an L. Arkansas could be a tricky W. The rest they should win.
