Vols Set To Support Breast Cancer Awareness

I support this, I lost both of my sisters to this disease, 13 days apart in 2011. One was a UT grad (Class of 1973) the other a MTSU grad. Each of them fought it for 3-4 years and it spreads everywhere.

Have you guys seen Oregon's helmets for this weekend? Wow. They look awesome.

My sister fought breast cancer last year. Im all for this.

I am too. I have made donations. I have a lady friend bravely combating this cancer now.

I'd like to see something change. It's rare (I think) but men get breast cancer too. When one goes into a breast cancer clinic/service for help, I'd like to see him get it. Instead of shown the door and told the clinic serves women patients only. I'm not talking about guys who had surgery to become a woman or something like that. But a genuine man who is among that unlucky few who encountered the misfortune.
Yes, it happens: Man with ‘painful’ lump the size of golf ball in his breast is denied access to mammogram because of his sex

I am all for this...

This Link says 71.2% goes to programs and services sponsored by the ACS

Yes, I know that these programs and services are not all "research" but there is so much more to this problem than "curing" cancer. There is the real life fact that people have to live with this.

There is survivor support, end of life care, wigs, etc. etc. Things that do help.

IMHO its not about the sales of pink merchandise.. its simply the visual of the pink on the players. If its enough to get a few people to do some more self checks or go get a mammogram... then its 100% worth it.

Also, you people who are saying that more people die of colon cancer, prostate cancer.. etc etc.. I 100% agree with you... so my question to you is... why are you not taking up the cause that you pointed out. Why are you not raising money, creating drives, and doing whatever you can to bring awareness to the issues? Stop complaining about breast cancer awareness and do something about the other things.

Thanks!

Jeremiah

This!

I am a non-Hodgkin's survivor and I support a team at my business for the Light the Night walk for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. I can tell you that a lot of the funds raised in such an effort goes to various aspects of dealing with the disease, not just research for a cure.

Until you have sat in a vinyl chair with a chemo IV hooked into you, hard to imagine just what cancer patients of all kinds go through. And with the research into genetics, we are closer than ever to unlocking the cure for all kinds of cancer.

Oregon to wear pink helmets...clearly they want people to be more aware than us
Oregon Ducks to wear pink helmets vs. Washington State Cougars - ESPN

Never really been a big fan of all the pink hype in sports. Mainly because it seems like more of a waste of money to just provide "awareness" Aren't we all aware of it by now? How is having pink flags, or pink sweat bands really helping? What happens to all of the stuff they wear for one game? Is it auctioned off? It seems like it would be more beneficial to just use the money for a donation rather then spend it on pink attire.

Do they plan to support awareness of the other most prevalent cancer types also?

A mega racket. Gave $$$ directly to a survivor this year insted of wasting on the so called 'charity' she was promoting.

And the CEO makes nearly 25% more than any other charity of similar size.

Plus we support Multiple Sclerosis every day we don the orange!!!

My mom had a hard fought battle with breast cancer last yr. She is currently cancer free and in the process of reconstruction. If not for donations, proceeds of this nature, etc she would have lost her battle. Unless you have actually seen the impact of the awareness campaigns please don't judge it. As god the it's doesn't look right with our colors WHO GIVES A RATS ASS WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE???? it's football

I knew when I opened this thread back up that i would be grilled for my comment above. But i stand by it. Pink accessories are not going to do much in the long run.

IMO, if UT wanted to help, they should donate the money they used to buy the pink gear to the cancer fight. Or better yet, donate the money generated from the ticket sales and TV revenue. Don't see them doing that? A few pink towels aren't going to do anything but look awful. JMO

Arguing over supporting the effort to find the cure for breast cancer?
Only on Volnation. Smdh.

No. But a lot of crooks are millionaires at the expense of people's generosity. Only "charity" that rips more people off than breast cancer funds is the Humane Society.

Heart disease kills more women and receives less attention.

Where is the feel good in you?

For one, there shouldn't be a woman alive that isn't aware of breast cancer. That has been pounded in their head every time they went to the doctor and public service announcements on radio and T.V. You would have to live under a rock not to know

Always, the best awareness is education

However, I have no problem with the team showing support for those women and families that have suffered through the effects of cancer

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I'm seeing some arguing in here.

Great news for you and your mom! Breast cancer has a really high survival rate, lots of progress.

Could you explain exactly how specific donations allowed your mom to survive? That would be a pretty intriguing story. Thanks!

It's not about looking good. Guess that's hard to fathom.

My mom received treatment thorough the Mary Ellen Locher center in Chattanooga which is mainly funded by donation, proceeds etc including Breast Cancer Awareness sells. Not only medically but also psychologically women are effected and those things were made available to her free of charge when she wanted to give up in her fight. The support groups and phsychological treatment was very critical. Do u know what the cost of one single chemo treatment is? It's roughly 20k every time it's performed. Without the help from donation funded programs she would have never been able to afford the care she received. When people see sports programs wearing the pink they go out and buy it themselves and trust me it adds up. It's basically the way commercials use players to sell their products.

The pink is to hopefully to get women to think. When was the last time I took an exam.
