Vols Spring Practice #6

Seldon fills a position no one else on the roster fits. Utility knife for whom the other team has to account...no matter where he lines up. Think Princeton Fant but way more explosive. AP said on the VQ Podcast that he'll outgrow RB. That's shortsighted and fails to acknowledge Heupel's creativity imo.

That would not be the logic of his sentence, and since this guy makes a living with words, I'll have to suppose he said what he meant when he wrote:
"...with Small sidelined and Seldon limited as well. It’s hard to see him having a major role this season but freshman running back Desean Bishope has some wiggle to him."

Not going all professor on anyone, but recognizing that in the whole of VolNation, English was not everyone's first language...

In English, unlike most languages, proximity more often determines how we interpret what refers to what. So him should refer back to Seldon not having a major role this season. The but means "by contrast" with what has just been stated: "having a major role." So, in Schumpert's opinion, unlike Seldon, Desean Bishop could earn him a role this season due to his "wiggle."

Leaving aside the grammar, it makes sense to me that Seldon would be unlikely to play this season because he brings such a versatile skillset. We all anticipate that he will be learning multiple positions in order to maximize his unique ability to create mismatches by shifting to other positions before the snap. I don't think they will unleash him before he is ready to create a full array of havoc on defenses.

Maybe Bishop, like Dylan Sampson last season, will earn some situational carries because he will be learning only one position.

That's my take, FWIW.
The contradiction is that despite the fact Bishop is unlikely to have a major role, he does have some wiggle. The sentence pretty clearly referred to Bishop, with the “not likely to be a contributor” comment prefacing the statement that he showed “wiggle.”

I had to go back and relisten to the podcast. AP said he would not outgrow the RB position. He said if he's not a Rb, then he's a WR, but no he will not outgrow the RB position.

Starts at 0:54 seconds

I thought because Milton had had all these years as a player, that he cannot get better? I was told by many on here that Milton will never be good because he cannot improve. Strange because from what’s being reported, it seems he is improving.

“Outgrow as in PHYSICALLY? Yeah.”

I’m gonna chime in on this sentence structure debate, because why the hell not.

A clearer sentence would have been “While it’s hard to imagine freshman running back Desean Bishop having a major role this season, he does have some wiggle.”

Establish the subject of your sentence and take the guesswork out of it.

But these guys have to watch practice, take notes, write their report, proofread it (maybe — he “through” the ball? Damn dude), and submit it in a couple hours time. They’re not writing War and Peace, cut them some slack.

He would be unstoppable as a slot receiver

I dont thank us as Tennessee'uns git enuf street cred fir hour sentence structure. Luckily, we're more known for kicking Bama's ass... VB

Not gonna lie. I'm having some..."questions" about Seldon
- I'm not sure why Cam Seldon only had 86 touches his SR year
- Didn't touch the ball once at Army Game ( I can chalk that up to player bias from those coaches...)
- BUT...Now that he's on campus he's been in a red jersey the whole time- yet when he was on spring break he's been lifting, running and looking awesome lol.

Yeah...i'm going to pump the breaks on him a bit.
I really hope I'm just being a bit critical. Because i'm not getting a favorable impression rn.

Seriously tho, Bishop had like 320 carries his senior year (440 as a junior )...and that cat is out there full go.

Yeah, I was skeptical of your Bishop fandom. He’s a notable addition to the program.

Guess we need forensics.
Cain says yeah over AP’s no, as in yeah to the question of do they mean outgrow physically. Then AP says no and no again. What he says after that would make no sense if he said yes. He said if he’s not a RB hes a reciever. If he gets bigger than he currently is he would be more of an H-back or TE.

As always you have to consider the source(s). I will go with the coaches and Hooker's takes.

My concerns with Bishop is the tread on his tires.
He got 100 fewer carries as a Sr.
He looks more athletic as Sr, than he did has a Jr imo. I agree. I'm glad to have him @swampfoxfan

He's physically pretty well put together. Him going full contact will give him a real shot to contribute.

As far as Seldon...i'm hoping that there's some undisclosed injury that he's just being private about.

I know everyone is sky high on Squirrel and he has that type talent, but nobody IMO should sell Ramel Keyton short at all. He was solid possessing the football last year and got on the field before Squirrel. Keyton is a winner, book it.

Coaching them up!

In the trenches, returning starting center Cooper Mays has continued to build upon his leadership while going through his third year of spring practice. Offensive line coach Glen Elarbee spoke to the Knoxville native's ability to lead by example through the first week of 2023 spring ball.

"He's kind of been the cowbell," Elarbee said. "He's gotten after guys when things haven't been right, has led in the meeting room, has coached on the field, has coached in the meeting room.

"The biggest compliment I can give to him, I was running a drill, and two young guys weren't doing it right. Before I can even get to correct them, it was just like a flash, and Cooper came out of nowhere, blurred across my face, grabbed them and started demonstrating and doing it. I think that kind of leadership translates. My guys see that, guys want to help coach and be a part of it. He's not skipped a beat and has stepped right in on that leadership role."

Cooper has been a great center for us. very reliable, pretty much never hear his name called, a good thing with the OL, and definitely wants to be here. I remember him playing early on in his career with an injury. Limping bad between plays but would blow his guy off the ball at snap.
