Vols success this year depends on ???????

I think it'll come down to how much our running game can take the pressure off of whoever the "QTB" is this fall.

If the coaching staff will just make sure to game plan according to the Monday morning water cooler Head Coaches here on VolNation....we should be fine....just ask them :dunno:

Mostly in my opinion on how well the quarterback plays..

What would you define as success?

I would call it 6-8 wins and no 20+ pt losses. IOW's be competitive and play to the level of your talent.

As always, success depends on development and coaching. UT has 4 talented options at QB. With good coaching, one or two will emerge and play well assuming the WR's come along.... and OL plays well. It all fits together. Coaches are responsible for making it work assuming there's sufficient talent- and there will be sufficient talent to win 6 to 8 games this fall.

Piss poor play at the QB position has led to consecutive losing seasons, an influx of better athletes is the only solution .

Better offense play with little to no turnovers, better defensive play with creating a lot of turnovers, better special teams play & better coaching. :) I nailed it!

Pull out all the stops and really go for it - don't coach and play scared of making mistakes - there was too much of that last year (overly conservative/predictable play calling - especially vs UF and Vandy).

Team speed. If the youngster coming onboard have some real speed, the Vols will be able to stay in games defensively.

Last couple of seasons... one mistake on defense meant giving up 50 to 70 yards on one play. There was not enough defensive speed on the field to overcome a missed assignment.

Back in the day... a busted assignment meant a 15 to 20 yard because there was a Deon Grant...an Al Wilson, a Jason Allen, an Eric Berry... or even a Jansen Jackson, with enough speed to get back into the play. Without those kinds of guys...those same plays go 80.

If Butch has gotten a handful of those type players, come fall... the Vols will be able to hang in there on the scoreboard & go bowling.

It depends on if this coaching staff can really coach the talent is here now unless they are all busts which is not the case for the players at least. Coaching will determine this seasons win loss record. No Excuses florida is a must win at all cost game.

D #, D #, D # in that order!!!

We have a great defense. Its ok we cant get ten points. Which I feel is about the ave. our offense usually musters. Especially after the glory days of Dooley, Cheney, and Bray.

Im gonna say sonething terrible but true.

I miss Derrick Dooley and his gunslingin' ways.

If he just had half a defense... well...

So im saying defense!!! Bring The Chief back!

Coaching. A truly good coach finds ways to win. If we don't have the horses for a pro-style offense, for example, then the coach should address that by changing the scheme to a wishbone, option, etc. A lot of coaches run into trouble by trying to force a certain gameplan knowing he doesn't have the personnel. This is why I'm still not sold on Butch just yet. Last year he should have abandoned the shotgun and run his offense from under center more, focusing on play-action passing to tight ends and running backs. Prior to the season he should have worked on option and trap plays with much more trickery to get guys into space rather than hoping a true freshman QB could make the throws every time. He should have used more wildcat formations and employed the use of a fullback, taking advantage of our O-line. I feel his approach under-utilized the strength of the team (O-line) by putting them in impossible pass-protection situations. When you don't have the talent to compete head to head with most teams, you have to get creative. I saw none of this from Jones.

Calling a fake field goal on 4th and long is your idea of overly conservative?

There was not enough of that - they did some good stuff in the second half of the UGA game but other than that we have seen a very few plays that caught anyone by surprise (fewest I can remember in 30 years of following UT football).
They also kept calling running plays that most of the time gained more yards sideways than up the field - incredibly frustrating to watch (they kept doing it over and over again and this was the main reason OL underperformed this year).

The line play both OL & DL. That's the real mystery for next year, even more than QB play. I believe between the 4 qbs one will emerge as a competent field general. The rbs will be fine if we can run the ball that's why the OL is the key to the offense. Everybody knows no DL play no good defense. So both lines are the key to everything next year.

.

If the DC doesn't do a better job with schemes and playcalling so that they are in positions to make plays... they'll look slow regardless of how fast they are.

The "no speed" angle was WAY overplayed by many this year as an excuse. Being out of position and not keeping leverage were far bigger problems... and issues that coaches are primarily responsible for.

At that point of the game, it was a bad call. The chances should have been taken earlier when Vandy had a back up at every DB position. Give Dobbs a two man route and let him hang it out there. UT had several receivers who could have outrun anyone Vandy had in the secondary.

We are getting significant upgrades at the receiver position, and we have a good amount of talent returning in the defensive backfield and at linebacker. Although we lost Neal at running back, we still have Lane coming back, and we have a 5* running back (Jalen Hurd) coming in, so I think we will be fine at the tailback position.

The truly huge question marks for this team are whether our subpar QB play will improve, and whether our offensive and defensive line play will drop off due to the loss of so many talented Seniors. If our QB play improves, and our line play doesn't drop-off too bad, we may surprise a lot of folks this upcoming year:)
