Vols success this year depends on ???????

The truly huge question marks for this team are whether our subpar QB play will improve, and whether our offensive and defensive line play will drop off due to the loss of so many talented Seniors. If our QB play improves, and our line play doesn't drop-off too bad, we may surprise a lot of folks this upcoming year:)

I agree, but subpar QB play as well as subpar O-line play was at least partially caused by poor coaching and game planning. That must improve as well next year if we are going to surprise anyone.

Well, Duh! The team that scores the most points WILL win the game! Was Brent Hubbs trying to be cute with that statement?

I believe Sparty was trying to be cute with that statement.

I'll lend you my sarcasm detector if you'd like. :hi:

At that point of the game, it was a bad call. The chances should have been taken earlier when Vandy had a back up at every DB position. Give Dobbs a two man route and let him hang it out there. UT had several receivers who could have outrun anyone Vandy had in the secondary.

Doesn't matter if the WRs can out run the DBs if they don't chatch the ball. Which more then once in that game. Also Dobbs may have been playing with a hurt hand in that game.

They also kept calling running plays that most of the time gained more yards sideways than up the field - incredibly frustrating to watch (they kept doing it over and over again and this was the main reason OL underperformed this year).

Yet they had more yards per carry last year then Dooley and his high powered offense. Against a tougher schedule I might add.

If you want to compare that offense vs Dooley's last year's offense you will discredit yourself even further - better for your own sake to not get into comparing those stats.

Our opponents not playing well. Anytime you're replacing both lines, you're in for some inconsistency and breakdowns. Our defense will need to be 2+ on the turnover margin for us the be competitive in my opinion. Looking at our schedule, 5-7 seems likely...again. However, this recruiting class, full of legacy players, will get us back to a competive SEC team in two years.

Another 5-7 season and this staff is gone (no staff will or should ever survive back to back loosing seasons at UT).

With the players we had last year on offense anyone could have called plays and looked like a genius. Considering that running the ball is the only thing we did well this year you would think opposing defense would concentrate on the run and stop it. But we still managed to get more yards per carry with the same o-line and RBs while working with less offensive play makers. IMO this coaching staff did a better job at least when it comes to the running game.

Yep that's it. Let's keep changing coaching staffs every 2-3 years. That's what we need to pull out of this nose dive. Smh.

I'm not calling for coaching change (and will not be at the end of the year either even though I think OC and/or DC may need to be replaced). But watch and see what happens at the end of next year if we go 5-7 or worse (in that case there will be very few people left on CBJ bandwagon and the noise and pressure to get rid of him will be tremendous).

1. Offensive Line

2. Defensive Line

3. Offensive Line

4. Defensive Line

and etc. I don't care how good or bad the so-called skill positions are, if the offensive line doesn't do it's job, neither can those trying to run or pass. If the defensive line doesn't do it's job, even if the secondary does, yards will be gained against the Vols with sickening regularity.

Both O & D lines are new this year and are the key to how we'll do.
As line play goes this coming year, so go the Vols.

What would you define as success?

I would call it 6-8 wins and no 20+ pt losses. IOW's be competitive and play to the level of your talent.

As always, success depends on development and coaching. UT has 4 talented options at QB. With good coaching, one or two will emerge and play well assuming the WR's come along.... and OL plays well. It all fits together. Coaches are responsible for making it work assuming there's sufficient talent- and there will be sufficient talent to win 6 to 8 games this fall.

sjt, you seem to always place prime importance on development and coaching. I would point out that development is enfolded in coaching. So .. it's coaches preparing the players. With that I agree, but with a couple of caveats.

The first is, as we've seen with the D over the last two years, some players are un-coachable or nearly so. I've coached teams who were a joy, soaked up everything, and really tried to apply the lessons. I've also coached teams where one or more were un-coachable because of attitude and that attitude was infectious. I believe the Vols have had more than their share players who had the physical attributes but were un-developable, un-coachable; and that's impacted the whole team. Example: McCuller's never acquiring the 'nastiness' to get it done with regularity, and even admitting it took 'getting him mad'. Before the year started, CBJ commented in an interview he had pointed that out to Big Dan. You can bet he never let it out of his mind through the season either. That's just one. Another is guys just signing off their rep cards during S&C when only the S&C coach is allowed contact. Player attitude-hmmmm.

The next caveat is coaching, but it's game day coaching. We've not seen enough with an experienced full depth chart to make a call on that yet.
