This was discussed a week ago wasn't it? I don't think the details were released but pretty awesome if your a notre dame fan. I think the SEC only has 3 adidas schools? (MSU, A&M and us). I remember reading an article where several schools were unhappy with Adidas because of a factory closing overseas and the company refused to pay workers or something like that (especially Wisconsin) but I guess Notre Dames decision was money.
I blame nike for all the stupid & ugly uniforms over the past 10-12 yrs so I'm not a big fan of theirs. UT used to have them before Adidas. I don't really see who we have as a big deal but it matters to some kids (recruits) I'm sure all schools go with whoever brings the biggest wheelbarrow of cash!
That's interesting about the factory closing because some of our area high school teams prefer Adidas over Nike. The reason they haven't switched has been some schools who wear Adidas have had issues receiving their gear in a timely manner. Makes more sense now, thanks.
First time poster, been lurking for a while. I'm a UT grad and lifelong ND fan.
ND is sticking their neck out a bit on this - UA obviously has a much shorter resume than Nike or Adidas, and I think there is some concern about the quality of their products (e.g. shoes) versus Nike in particular.
But given (1) the money involved and (2) lukewarm reception to ND's Shamrock Series uniforms in recent years, it makes sense. Perhaps the one thing that pushed ND over the edge was adidas's decision to give Michigan "most favored nation" status (How Michigan remains No. 1 with Adidas - Portland Business Journal). ND wasn't going to get that with Nike (and Oregon), leaving a spot for Under Armour.
Also interesting is that ND is potentially taking some of its compensation as UA stock. I'm not sure of any other school who's had that type of agreement with their outfitter.
Heh. I think of it as a privilege.
FWIW, by saying that I "graduated from UT" shouldn't imply that I'm not a Vols fan. By all means - I'm as much of a Vol fan as I am an ND fan.
Also, the vast majority of ND fans that I interact with have great respect for Tennessee. They have nothing but nice things to say about their trips to Knoxville - atmosphere, fans, etc - as well as the UT fans who've made the trip to South Bend.
Based on the commentary in this thread, however, sounds like that feeling isn't necessarily shared among these parts. I'll keep my blue and gold to myself...
As I've said before, they'll have to take far less money to make the change. But that doesn't seem to be the dealbreaker it once was.
Interesting potential choice, given the AD revenue situation and all the people we're still paying not to coach. Do you know when the last staff's buyouts are scheduled to be completed?
The factory they mention was one run by a contractor overseas that made shirts for a variety of companies, including Nike and Adidas, that closed several years ago. The contractor didn't issue severance and went out of business. These "human rights" groups basically bullied these companies into paying severance for the workers. The "human rights" company took a finders fee. It was a crock, but Nike, Adidas, Russell and others wrote a check to stop the bad PR.
There are plenty of schools, college and high school, that have had problems getting uniforms and gear from every company. In the case of high schools, it usually falls on the local dealer when there's a problem. Nike and Adidas have a giant warehouse where they just ship out gear to these local people that get it embroidered/screen printed/etc. That's where the backup normally is.
Well, from a budget standpoint, they're already off the books. Tennessee law requires public employee buyouts to be paid in full at the time of termination to a trust. If the employee chooses to be paid in increments (and most do for tax purposes), then the installments are paid out of the trust.
The only people still getting a check are Dooley and Sunseri. But their payments don't affect the current budget at all.
I don't get it.
There is literally no evidence to support that recruits prefer Nike over Adidas.
We have a top 5 recruiting class right now...after back to back 5-7 seasons...and we wear...Adidas...
