Don’t envy our coaches trying to get players in the portal but at the same time not bringing in too many players or similar players to the young guys we already have making the young guys feel they are being buried on the depth chart. Think Staes is perfect for our program. Solid run blocker who will compliment Davis and won’t be viewed as someone we are bringing in to play over Davis. Allows Echols and Okoye to develop.

They could have done a little more digging into background and figured he isn’t a culture fit. Could have wanted more than we are willing to offer a TE transfer. Plenty of reasons this could have changed

I guess so, but the prevailing theory seems to be that he is all catch and no block. So he is a copy of Ethan Davis. They knew all that before they offered.

Well, if we don’t snag Staes, then we likely didn’t tell Joly to look elsewhere and we’ll have to wipe the egg 🍳 off our face. I’m ready for some good news.

Tight ends are critical to the success of this offense.

We have one (injury prone) scholarship right end on the roster. I’m not counting Okoye yet because he’s a ways off from being ready.

And we are to believe we told Joly thanks but no thanks because we landed a commitment from a different tight end in the portal?

Yeah idk if I’m buying that.

My opinion is that we decided to look elsewhere based on info we are getting from Holden Staes that he may commit if all goes well.

Plus Joly is 6’3 - 215… not really the body type we need as interior blocking is so crucial in this offense.

We have a receiving TE on roster with Ethan Davis, plus Echols coming in is a receiving TE as well, we’re looking for more of a physical combo/blocking TE body type.

I like Holden Staes from ND so hope he commits, but even if not, I believe we must have garnered more interest in portal from TEs who fit the mold better.
