Vols vs Mo common opponents

Eh, UGA punted 3 times in the first half vs Clemson. A better offensive team would have had UGA on the ropes. But Dabo has let his ego get the better of him, and now he doesn't have the horses to match up with the elite teams.
I think you are taking some pretty big leaps there based on an extremely small sample size. Is Clemson really that bad on offense or is UGA that good on defense? Clemson scored 56 points in the first half Saturday against what traditionally is a decent G5 team in App State. I also don't have a problem believing Clemson is above average on defense either. Pretty much their whole front 7 are Top 300 players out of high school and that's usually the strength of their team.

UGA defense is certainly great. But under Dabo, Clemson traditionally has been great offensively against even the best defenses. That just isn't the case anymore. I mean this is roughly the same offense that we held to 14 points 18 months ago. Clemson isn't replenishing the cupboard like it used to. I'm not knocking UGA's defense. It's just a fact that this isn't the same Clemson offense we are used to seeing under Dabo.

And I am not saying UGA has a mediocre offense or anything. They have a great OL, a stable of RBs, and a seasoned QB who fits their offense well. That alone makes them a very good offense. But unlike previous years, I just think they lack the elite playmakers that had the ability to take over games. Those type of players allowed them to keep up with teams like Bama and Ohio State whenever they got down by 14+ points. I am not seeing that sort of player for UGA this year.

10-2 or 11-1 gets us into the playoff no question. Mizzou has a pretty soft schedule. I'd love to meet them in the playoff. Heupel definitely kept receipts on Chiclets Drinkwitz.

Of the 6 SEC teams in the top 7, Missouri plays 1 (who was in a 1 pt game with USF in the 4th). Insane how much of break they got on the schedule. No UGA, no TEX, no ole piss, no UT. They are the only team in the SEC that I feel should be eliminated from the playoffs if they have 2 losses.
It would be nice to meet them in the playoffs and see if they are still "standing on business".....

My heart says 11-1 my brain says 9-3. As great as the outcome of the NC State game was there were some problems. Outside of the defensive performance that game looked just like most games in 2023. The offense was... lumpy. Dylan Sampson and the TE's were the heroes of the offense. How much of the passing offense was shovel passes? I was seriously worried about our Oline. They were not opening holes.. Sampson got most of his yards after contact. Nico had defenders in his face way too many times from 3-4 man rushes. The second pick was definitely NOT Nicos fault....but I would argue the first one was him feeling he had to fit one in because of the constant pressure. The defense played so well it kinda covered that up.

I think next week they work on some of those things and rest the starters and get them ready for OK. My worry is how many teams look back on this tape? Because 3-3-5 gave us fits in the passing game. They were dropping 7-8 on every passing down and Nico wasn't able to check out of those plays because its kinda hard to know who is coming and who is dropping. I was watching Aaron Murray break down the passing plays and it was kinda wild. Maybe the 3-3-5 is the kryptonite to the veer and shoot?

I’m guessing we’re not considering our obligatory loss to Florida? 🤷🏽‍♂️. If we beat Florida, I’ll eat dog poop out of a red solo cup and not post video or anything. Just take my word for it.

Im betting that Florida will be starting their 5 star QB by the time we play…their starter was hurt last weekend but the new kid passed for 450 yards. Granted it was against a HS team but still, we’re not going to see the same sucky offense that played Miami

I think Missouri’s playoff chances with 2 losses will come down to how those losses happened. If they lose a close one to OU, beat Bama, and lose a close one to TX or UGA in the SEC championship then they are in.
If they lose a blowout to Bama along with any other loss they are out.

The real had scratcher will be what to do with them if they lose a close but competitive one to Bama and TX or UGA, everyone else on their schedule has bad or mid seasons (like OU being a 5 loss team) and they end up 11-2.

This year we have five common opponents, the Gumps, chokelahoma, the pigs, candy and pississippi State. Our score on both sides of the game versus their score should show which team is the best Without a head to head contest. I feel we will take care of business and go into the Georgia game undefeated and I just don’t know if Missouri can stand up to the task of winning out.
I feel we have a great chance to beat Georgia and win out ourselves, taking that SEC championship and our place in a playoff birth
In years past, I thought of our team as young men playing against full grown men. I now see our guys as FULL GROWN MEN, Playing for an outstanding group of coach’s That can take them to the victories we deserve.
And before you start talking about getting overexcited, Hell, I’m 66 years old. I’ve seen a lot of VOLUNTEER football and I do believe I am seeing the best of my lifetime.

Good news is teams can’t just switch to a 3-3-5 defense for one game. Remember how bad our D was when we swapped from a 4-3 to a 3-4 in 2012? Maybe teams like Bama or UGA have the talent on the bench to run some 3-3-5 defensive looks, but I’m guessing most teams we play won’t have good enough D linemen to eat up multiple blockers.

With the way the schedules are, there is a good chance at least one if not 2 out of Texas/Mizzou/Ole Miss make the SEC championship.

Going off the top SEC teams right now:

Georgia has the hardest road with @Alabama, @Ole Miss, @ Texas, and Tennessee.

Alabama has Georgia, @ Tennessee, & Missouri.

Ole Miss has Georgia.

Mizzou has @Alabama.

Texas has Georgia.

Vols have Alabama & @Georgia.

Of the Top 6 teams, we are 4th in most favorable schedule.

1. Ole Miss (1 opp, home)
2. Texas (1 opp, home)
3. Mizzou (1 opp, away)
4. Tennessee (2 opps, home & away)
5. Alabama (3 opps, 2 home, 1 away)
6. Georgia (4 opps, 1 home, 3 away)

We could literally see an Ole Miss vs Missouri SEC championship game.

This is correct.... but we play a lot of teams that are like 4-2-5 base. They don't have to literally switch the defense to use some of those concepts. Our defense for example is basically a 3-3-5 we just use Pearce with a hand in the dirt more often but for all intents and purposes he and the Star play a similar role to the SLB and nickel safety in a 3-3-5. We just play him on the line more.

We play in the SEC and most teams here have enough depth and personnel to slightly switch up concepts fairly easily if they want to.

If we get over 250 yrds rushing then I hope all of our opponents play the 3-3-5. Once we adjusted it was no problem at all.

Wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest. In my opinion, UGA and Texas are 1a and 1b in the SEC right now. We’re just behind them. Ole Miss needs to play a team with a pulse, as does Mizzou. Jury is still out on Bama. They are getting benefit of the doubt because of the logo, but the logo doesn’t play games for you, and Nick Saban isn’t on that sideline anymore.

The road to the conference championship will run through Athens, Austin, and Knoxville.

Running 3-3-5 might take the deep ball away (at least until someone misses an assignment), but it opens up all kinds of open running lanes and it won't allow for any pressure on Nico. Nico will average 8 yards a carry every game if teams decide they want to run a primary 3-3-5 against us. And he'll create passing lanes by moving out of the pocket.

Texas is gonna roll UGA this year. I predict Texas wins by 2 TDs.

For all the players Michigan lost, they still returned most of a pretty dominant defense, including Mason Graham who is widely considered a top 5 overall talent, and Kenneth Grant who is also a projected 1dt round pick. And yet Texas handled Michigan's defense with ease.

Not sure I agree they are going to roll them. I would put $1000 on Georgia if they were getting double digits, but they won't be getting anything close to that. In fact, they will probably be favored or it will be a pick

I’ll keep my opinion of your brain to myself 😊

But seriously I also wasn’t thrilled with the offense.

On3’s Andy Staples also updated his playoff bracket this week. After starting the season with Tennessee as the 11-seed in his preseason projections, Staples has moved Tennessee up to the sixth-seed as the third-highest ranked team from the SEC behind No. 2 Georgia and No. 5 Texas. Staples also has Ole Miss at No. 7, Alabama at No. 8, and Missouri at No. 11.

On a quick interesting note, Tennessee’s Week 3 opponent Kent State has the lowest FPI rating of all FBS programs at No. 134 (-24.3 rating).
