i thought about that too. but the only thing that gives Georgia/Auburn the edge, is usually both of those teams are good on a national level. where as ole miss and msu are not.

it's a great rivalry, and being from MS, i can vouch that the hate between those two schools is as great as any other two schools, including Alabama and Auburn....

they just don't have the same stage that some of the other rivalries have....

on the same token, GA/AU really do not like each other...you get south of Atlanta around Columbus, GA....it's real heated down there between the two schools.....

Historically (in the late seventies and early eighties) the Ga/Aub game was definately a bigger rivalry than Ole Miss/Miss St. A case could be made that it was as big as the Tennessee/Bama game because it was always either teams last hurdle to a significant bowl or a share of a championship.

The importance of the Ga/Aub game shifted more than any other rivalry once the SEC split into two separate divisions.

yeah, i agree with that....the Ole Miss/MSU game hasn't ever had the same stage as the AUB/GA game...

But i would also argue that the UT/Bama game shifted as much as the GA/AUB game...both East West rivals....the creation of the two divisions in the SEC created natural rivalries that weren't as big as some of the more traditional rivalries...UGA/TN before the split wasn't a big game, not as big as TN/AUB or TN/Bama...and niether was UF/TN....

So while both the GA/AUB and TN/BAMA games are still big rivlary games, they don't necessarily have an impact on who wins their respective divisions because of tie breakers etc...of course i'm not saying they don't matter, and given the way the two divisions have played out since it's inception, all conf. games are tie breakers, esp if you lost to a divisonal opponent already....but you get the idea...in order to win the division and play for the title, it's more important to beat your divisional foes--GA/FL/TN--do that and even if you drop the AUB/Bama game, you still own tie breakers......anyway, you get the idea...

I thought of that while I was writing the initial post, but their is so much bad blood that still exists, that the rivalry is not as diluted. In terms of championship significance you are correct.

As Gordon Solie would say, there was never any love loss between Vince Dooley and Pat Dye. This may sound silly, but since there is not a Dog or War Eagle head coach with significant ties to the program, that also takes the rivalry down a notch. Whereas the UT/Bama game still has a Vol and Bammer for life coaching the teams.

Got to wonder what going on with poll. LSU currently on top with best fans and Athens, GA on top for best college town. Find neither to be anywhere near reality.

People say that Madison Wiscosin is a hot college town, but I have never been up there. As much as I hate the Dawgs I must say that Athens is near the top of my list. When you think of the bands, the clubs and the gals it is hard to beat.

Been to Athens once but was in and out for game. Didn't go downtown, so maybe. Best places I've been to for football party are LSU (when they weren't ranked), and Ohio State campus was rocking. Almost anywhere can be fun when the beer flows like wine and there are pretty things to look at everywhere.

I understand....I was separating gameday with the overall attributes of a "college town".

Been to Athens and it was one of my favorite trips.

Your last sentence describes Arizona St. exactly. I think I'll miss it during the season.

As I stated in a previous post now that Dooley and Dye are gone it has lost its luster

Why wouldn't it be the best?
Fans of neither team consider it their biggest game. Auburn fans are far more concerned about beating Alabama and UGA supporters save their antipathy for the Gators.

That game is at best fourth behind Alabama-Auburn, Tennessee-Alabama, and Georgia-Florida.

It's the oldest rilvary in the SEC.

Out of 109 games played, Georgia has scored 1648 points to Auburn's 1650.

I'd call that a rivalry.

that's true and i do think it's a great rivlary (as previously stated), but i think Hat's right...if you took polls from both fan bases, UGA's cheif rival is GT, UF and TN in that order...i would expect Aub to be 4th on their list....

Same with Auburn...i'd bet they would most all tell that Bama is the cheif rival followed by GA.

doesn't mean it's not a rivalry, just not the best one....

Couldn't care less how old the rivalry is. Kansas and Missouri have played a bunch of times. So have Iowa and Minnesota. Couldn't care less about those games. If neither school considers it their biggest rivalry game, it's safe to say it's not the best rivalry in the SEC.

It is a rivalry and everybody calls it that. So is UT-UK and UT-Vandy. UT-Vandy isn't that big of a deal, because it may be the biggest game of the year for VU, but to us, it's just another automatic win (usually). To be a big time rivalry, the game needs to be the biggest event of the year for both schools. That's why I think UT-Bama has cooled a bit, because a lot of fans look at UT-UF as the biggest game. Anyhow, nobody at Georgia or Auburn views that rivalry as the season's most important game.

Also, the argument of the impact of that game as far as national rankings go is also not that important, because until recently both teams were rarely ranked.
