I dont care if hes a walk-on....Hes a 5th year senior thats prob worked his a$$ off to get where hes at....Just the fact of him being ahead of a 4 or 5 star juco recruit tells me that he has the drive, will power, mentality, passion, etc to get the job done.......I wouldnt get to worried out the situation, its only spring and a whole lot will happen between now and opening kickoff...

So why don't we have more walk-ons come in and sit for a few years then when its time for them to step up they will magically be good?

Im sorry, the most important position on the o-line being filled by a walk on isnt a good thing any way you want to spin it.

It's 4/2 and you are talking **** about the potential left tackle without watching him block one person.

If he's doing something he shouldn't, lets hear it. Give us some technical advice. Do you know him? What drives him? How much did he learn. How strong has he become? Maturity? Mind? Footwork? Lateral quickness? Hands? Leverage?

Give us something. Anything. That you are surprised a 4 yr kid has a chance to start over a juco says enough about your thought process.

Well, the last time, that I recall, our Vols had a walk-on that started on the O-line we made a bowl game. Remember the Sullins twins? Maybe it's a sign....

How long can it take a 20 year old who has been an athlete his whole life to get into shape? Surely not longer than a couple of months. A young man with his obvious talent should respond quickly to work outs I would think?

Months? If you work your butt off, it is possible to get in shape in 2 weeks(strictly cardio speaking). I know because I have had to do it.

And that is from completely out of shape to peak shape.

If he isn't in shape come summer, time is not the issue.

I think this is a little bit different circumstance :)

Basically what I was saying. Maybe his "obvious talent" was exaggerated in order to recruit, fill the depth chart, and cover CBJ's a$$ for not recruiting the position. It's like all the hype around CP, and then him showing up and not getting that starting job. Kind of strange..

What the world??

If he can block and man, not allow a sack and open a hole for Hurd, Lane or any other back then let the kid play!

I know it's hard to believe, but every once in a great while, a walk-on turns out to be a pretty damn good player.

Aeneas Williams, Darren Woodson, Santana Moss, Clay Matthews, and Logan Mankins(to throw in an OL) are just some players that started their collegiate careers as walk-ons, then went on to the NFL. I'm not saying it happens a lot, but it's not unprecedented. If the young man earns the job, let's see him actually play before all the "woe is us" talk begins. After all the bad, maybe we've finally won the lottery.

If interested, here is some notable reading regarding walkon players:

1. Behind the Scenes with College Football's Unsung Hero, the Walk-on | Bleacher Report

2. More at: https://www.google.com/search?q=Wal...la:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&channel=sb

Not meant to insult Blair, rather to give more awareness of Gilliam's journey and thus why he deserves the highest respect. Blair will be fine by game time, I'm absolutely positive. But don't be surprised if Gilliam is entrenched as a started or regular piece of the rotation.

Great article. Stanford had 8 former walk-ons on the two deep last year. The google site lists a lot of similar stories. Y'all need to STFU about this type of thing cause you obviously don't have a clue about what you are talking about.

Why are you so mad? I wasn't talking **** about him I just said a walk on starting LT isnt a good thing. This is the best football conference in the country. He was a walk on for a reason. Im sorry if I hurt your feelings or his.

I think a lot of walk-ons are ignored by coaches precisely because they weren't recruited. Happens a lot, at all schools. Obviously most walk-ons aren't very good--but some who are pretty good get overlooked because of bias. I think our OL could be an issue this year.

Mad at fools? You got the wrong guy. You gave an uninformed opinion about a kid you know nothing about, and couldnt analyze his technique or film to form a good opinion. Couldn't answer one question, but want to be woken up when it's over because he may be a starter.
Just making sure erybody knew where your opinion derived from, which was based off of nothing having to do with his play.

JimmyHyams: Wed 02:48pm UT walk-on senior OL Jacob Gilliam of Farragut will likely be put on scholarship, per Butch Jones. Gilliam won LT job in the spring.
