Wanna see what a weak schedule can do?

Outside of the Barn, the Vols are our biggest rivals, period.

Thank you for saying it. To some, Tennessee was at one point a bigger rival than Auburn. But the Tennessee-Alabama rival is what is RIGHT in a college football world that gets a lot wrong.

Good chance South Carolina is 5-5 right now with our schedule. 6-4 at best, if they beat Auburn. Losses to us, UGA, Bama, and Oregon at the very least.

Maybe. By the same token, it is easy to speculate on things that aren't going to happen.

Before the season started, we thought our schedule would be easier compared to the last few years. Nobody knew Missouri or Auburn would be as improved as they have been. Last year Miss. St. was better than we thought.

There's really not a lot you can do about it, save schedule 4 creampuffs for OOC games.

No they were terrible. They played a weak schedule including us that inflated their record, but then ended up losing 5 of their last 6.

To be honest, I just want wins. I don't care if we have to play Mac and sunbelt teams to get them. When you're playing in a bowl game, nobody remembers who you beat to get there. I just want there to be more wins than losses every year.

The whole "we don't back down from anybody" attitude is a waste of time. What good has that done us in the last decade? A win over Cal and a win over Miami and a whole bunch of losses. It's a joke to line up our current talent level with teams that are, sad to say, out of our league. Just soften the schedule for a few years to get our feet under us and then we can resume scheduling big OOC games.

I meant no one saw them being undefeated going into our game, nor had us losing to them.

This is thread is hilarious. We're arguing that we should get an easier schedule by ripping other teams for having easier schedules. So basically we make fun of teams for playing nobodies, but turn around and want to play nobodies as well.

The funniest part is I'm betting at least some of you saying this crap probably were also beating your chest during the 7 year Alabama winning streak, and constantly crowing about how we bring it during the 90s when suddenly playing tough schedules wasn't such a big deal.

Yes. Their nobody's are conference games they have to play. Illinois, Purdue, Indiana etc...

I'll never understand why people continue to post this. Have you even looked at the series history?

So what? History is just that. They do not care about UT. We are not a rivalry to them. Auburn and LSU are their rivals, we are merely another opponent from the other division... the weaker one at that.

I am old school and I still have my go to hell Alabama hat hanging on the wall.. that being said, Florida has become more of a rivalry for US... but even for them, it is distant to FSU and with a resurgent Miami...

Personally, I think we are homeless. :cray:

This is a good point. But I still don't believe that you can tag much importance to the "rivalry" moniker. I would say that Vandy is more a rivalry game since in years recent it is more meaningful in terms of bowl games...

Once the BCS is gone, I think we see more teams softening their schedules.

I don't think so, with 4 spots 1 loss won't kill you anymore. The benefits of playing a harder schedule(battle tested, better tv coverage/recruiting advantages, etc) outweigh the downsides of playing better competition. The current situation which rewards teams for going undefeated most years (besides Auburn and Ohio State) actually encourages a team to play a weaker schedule.

I'm not too familiar with how the new system will work. Will every team be chosen by a committee? No computers involved? Let's say Alabama schedules 3 cream puffs and a below average big conference school, let's say UNC or NC State or something along those lines, and is the preseason #1 or #2. If they run the table, would they not pretty much be a lock for one of the spots? I guess the question is whether preseason polls will count as much? They certainly seem to affect people's perception of the teams at the top.

I've always respected Tenn and LSU because they are willing to play tough opponents in OOC games. I definitely have less respect for a Florida that rarely or never leaves the state of Florida for a OOC game or a ND (independent) that schedules a cupcake before every legit opponent so they basically have two weeks to prepare for a tougher game.

I hate it when someone backs out of a home and home with Oregon and we get stuck with short notice filling the schedule with a Nichols State or some other team that's going to get squashed like a bug. Just hate those games give me tougher OOC games across everyone's schedule or take it out on them in the polls and bowl selection.

Playing FSU every year means nothing.

OOC competition only matters when you cross the state line.

Genius.

FSU is a decent program and a worthy OOC opponent, but lets face it, they rarely live up to preseason rankings and get most of their wins against pretty soft opponents. Granted the last couple years they've actually been pretty good. And they just may be the best team in the country this year.

And until Florida starts playing similar OOC games outside of the state of Florida, all they win is swamp bragging rights.

Florida in the last 30 years:
vs. PAC-10/12: Won 0, Lost 2 (bowl games), Tied 1
vs. Big-12: Won 2, Lost 1 (1-1 in bowl games)
vs. Big-10: Won 7, Lost 4 (all bowl games)
vs. Big East: Won 4, Lost 5 (3-2 in bowl games) One OOC outside of Florida
vs. ACC teams outside of Florida: Won 2, Lost 0 (both bowl games)
vs. ACC teams inside Florida: Won 12, Lost 12, Tied 1

In 30 years Florida has played 3 OOC games against BCS conference teams outside of Florida.

This is a team that has systematically refused to play a national OOC schedule of ANY sort.

It's not where you play, it's who you play.

When the BCS/CFB Playoff factors in OOC games played on the road outside your home state, maybe...just maybe...UF will give a damn about scheduling a home and home against UCLA or Michigan State, in addition to playing FSU every year.

Two of three UF's national titles came in seasons where our schedule was ranked toughest or second toughest in the nation.

I'm not sure how old you are, but there was a time not too long ago when FSU was this good, every year, for well over a decade.

You don't have to rack up frequent flyer miles down here to find legit OOC competition. In fact, it's smart business.

Why incur unnecessary travel expenses when...

1) UF doesn't need to leave the southeast to recruit.
2) On two occasions UF's SEC conference schedule plus FSU was good enough to warrant BCS title game consideration with one loss.
3) Football revenue fuels the rest of the athletic department's sports programs...and UF's sports programs are hands down the SEC's best.

So tell me again why UF should go schedule a home-and-home with Wisconsin or Texas?

Couldn't agree more, that its about "Who you play". When you play the same team year in and year out, it becomes incestuous and clouds a true value of a team. Variety makes for a stronger reputation. Over that 30 years and say 4 OOC games a year, that's 120 games and you've played 3 BCS teams outside the state of Florida!! That's not a NATIONAL program. That's a Florida program and undeserving of NATIONAL respect. Sure the SEC has been a very tough conference and that deserves respect, but when you play the same teams year in and year out you do not have a good measure of how a team stacks up on a national basis. Things get clouded and doubt sets in. Florida needs to be doubted.

As for my age, the first baseball game I watched on TV was the Dodgers and Giants.... Brooklyn Dodgers and NY Giants, transistors, color tv, lasers, disc brakes, cable television, north and south korea, statehood for Alaska and Hawaii, a catholic president, space flight, and seat belts were all in the future when I was born.

Why would a team desiring national respect limit themselves to such a small gene pool? Florida should always have doubts about whether they can compete across time zones or in strange unfriendly environments.

If you want to be the best play the best across the country or stand the risk of being considered a regional team rather than a national team.

Let's get one thing straight...Florida doesn't "desire" your respect or anyone's respect nationally. You refuse to respect Florida because you don't agree with our scheduling philosophy. Don't get it twisted. If you consider Florida to be a regional program, that's a you problem, not a Florida problem.

I'm sure if Oregon State finished ranked in the Top 5 for 14 straight years, and Oregon had to face them every year...in certain years before playing a conference championship game, you really wouldn't care if a rival fan suggested you need a home-and-home with Penn State.

On the game's biggest stage, that regional program you don't respect destroyed an Ohio State team many thought to be invincible...and two years later held the so-called greatest offense in CFB history to 14 points.

The SEC's national reputation and current BCS title streak started with that "regional" program in Gainesville...this current abortion of a season notwithstanding.

If an SEC schedule plus FSU...and Miami thrown in a couple times every decade...isn't good enough for an Oregon fan, then perhaps we should agree to disagree.

As an Oregon fan, I'd be more concerned with the national perception that your program is a gimmicky side show with infinite costume changes, and no crystal footballs to show for it.

In another post you pointed out that FU doesn't have to go outside the state to recruit. Nothing that any gaturd fan has ever said is more true than that. However, with the resurgence of FSU and UM and the rise of UCF, you might find becoming a little more difficult... That being said, FU can stand up and say that, but it doesn't prove them to be able to compete on the national stage year in and year out. I'll betcha you will NEVER go to Michigan in November, because you can't handle cold weather ball. And you refer to this season as an abortion. Until Spurrier arrived in Gainesville, the entire FU football program was nothing special... ever. So while you have had recent success, it is just that... recent. Just like Alabama fans as of late, you have been spoiled. This season was glorious to watch, and I haven't seen any FU gear in the gym on over a month. I STILL wear my big orange shirts to workout, because unlike gator fans, I steer clear of bandwagons. Have a nice day Lawrence... you are still on my ignore list, and I am sure you couldn't care less.

I disagree with you on one level. Florida is not a small gene pool. Muschump can go out his back door and throw a rock and hit a roster of 5 star recruits. Unlike UT he doesn't have to work that hard at recruiting. Oregon does it with flash and big money (Saw your facilities this year while I was there, and... as the kids say... omg) Tennessee has to do it with tradition. That is hard when your tradition was long ago, and the powerhouses of today (Bama excepted) are recent arrivals there.

But in the second paragraph, it is my contention that FU will not play outside the state or at least south of the Mason Dixon line is that they know that while they are in Florida, they are going to have mild weather for the majority of their games. Foley doesn't have the guts to schedule a game up north against a top 10 in November.

It's just too easy to be a FU fan when they are winning, but hard to find one when they aren't.

Thanks for the long winded response. :eek:lol:

I stand by everything I said earlier. An SEC schedule plus FSU every year is legit. If you think otherwise we should just agree to disagree.

A home and home against Michigan in November would be cool, but it's hardly necessary. It's as though FSU doesn't count, in spite of their program's track record.
