The United States played a big role in helping Iraq during the Iraq-Iran War. Just like they helped the "freedom fighters" of Afghanistan in their conflict with the Soviet Union. These are both well documented.

They might have helped, but Iraq wasn't rolling into Kuwait with Sherman tanks since the Soviet Union (you remember them right Comrade?) was their exclusive supplier of military arms. They had some US Sherman tanks captured from Iran, some artillery pieces, and a few bits of support equipment. The US never directly supplied them with military aid like they have with Ukraine. Iraq did get their hands on some stuff using back channels and my favorite military equipment phrase "dual use"..no different than Japan selling them Toyota Tacoma's which become technicals. We also provided training and intel, just like we are doing for Ukraine.
