Sak said while the A-10, a close-air support platform, is a great "support machine," one that is "durable" and "very deadly," Ukraine needs "fast and versatile" aircraft like the F-16, a multirole fighter jet.

The A-10 was built for "a very different war" than the one happening in Ukraine, current A-10 pilots told The Aviationist, explaining that the "permissive environment" needed for the A-10 to operate successfully and carry out the mission for which it was intended just is not there.

Lets be honest here. This was clearly yet another attempt to get rid of some outdated and obsolete equipment. No different than these old Warsaw Pact/Eastern European countries just emptying their stockpiles of old Soviet era weapons, with the hopes of replacing those outdated weapons with newer ones.

I mean, if they couldn't advance day by day it would be the biggest failure in the history of military warfare. These bozos prepped for a month on the doorstep and still failed. Hell, even if they succeed in stealing some of Ukraine's land - they still have two more NATO countries on their doorstep. So - congratulations, they played themselves. For their trouble, they've become global pariah's and have about 30k less citizens.

The key phrase above was "permissive environment".

In situations against 90% or more countries on Earth, such as Iraq and the Stan, where WE are at war and not Ukraine...the very 1st thing we do (always) is completely destroy all the SAM sites and AAA. See "shock and awe" in Iraq. We do this with Tomahawk cruise missiles, stealth bombers, and specially made fighters just for taking out SAMs such as A6s, F15Es, etc.... we always do this first.

Then we have "permissive environments" where there is absolutely NOTHING on planet Earth as deadly as an A10 warthog for destroying tanks, artillery, even bases and command/control. When US forces hear BRRRRRRTT coming from the sky, they know the battle is won and enemy forces are decimated with survivors on the run for a place to hide. Numerous examples of this...hell you can go watch dozens of videos on YouTube and hear the BRRRRTTT yourself. Even the "flying tanks" that A10s are cannot handle direct hits from SAMs though. Maybe 1 and lose a wing or engine (only aircraft that can afaik) but even real tanks like Abrams with reactive and plate armor cannot take muliple strikes from real missiles.

This is Russia proper we are talking about right next to ukraine and fortified with mucho S400 SAM sites that can hit aircraft still in Ukraine airspace....slow moving (relatively +/_ 600 mph max) A10s with its huge payloads of bombs, rockets, autocannon etc are not gonna fare well in airspace heavily defended by SAM sites . Doesnt make them obsolete or junk...makes them out of place.

Hell even Russia is flying their POS MiGs at treetop levels...low and fast...because Ukraine has been dropping them like flies when they dont. Not with mega$ SAMs either...with Stingers and MANPADS shoulder fired munitions . The A10s are much better ground attack jets than the MiGs and are feared by infantry/artillery worldwide....
But they will suffer heavy lossed in a fortified SAM and AAA rich airspace. They were never designed or intended to operate in such hostile skies .

A-10's rock the world when you have air superiority. Since no one has that in Ukraine (lol) the F-16, which serves the same purpose (ground support) has better survivability. This isn't earth shattering. And we have 30+ years of A-10 video shredding Soviet/Russian equipment to sh!t so we aren't really going to see anything new.
