Surely he knows that the nuclear fallout from even a moderate attack on the US would also kill him and everyone in Russia, in fairly short order. And that's even if our retaliation was muted.

If he gets desperate, then yes. By desperate I mean that he knows if he loses a conventional war then he is toast. He is sick anyways, so he is toast soon. Me fear is that if he thinks "to hell with it all, I'll take as many with me as I can". Hopefully cooler heads in Russia would prevail ultimately if he made that call. Heck, we likely have a couple of trident subs in the black sea that can hit Russia with 60 nukes even before they have time to counter....if we wanted to of course.

Which is where my take comes from. Putinwas around during the Cold War he's seen the USSR at arguably its peak. I believe he wants to be the one who took down the country that took down the iron curtain. Imo thats his end game and the why behind what he's doing.
